Limit for reliable power on track?

Just wondering about how much I need to need to reduce boost on my car to keep the engine in one piece for 25 minute track sessions. Due a restrictive O2 housing, my boost creeps to 24-25 psi up top no matter how low I set it in the tune. [UPDATE: I fixed this in October 2017] I'm just worried about reliability if I really stay in it for consecutive laps. EGTs are in the very low 900c range at 7500 rpm and generally my coolant temps stay at 210 or less under boost. My oil temps usually stay at 240-250 on track with 15w-50 Dominator. Forged pistons and rods, 2.0, BBK journal bearing turbo, big radiator and FMIC, stock oil cooler setup. Not sure what kind of HP its making, but I'm guessing around 400whp at 24psi. No dyno with this turbo and tune.

Am I in the danger zone assuming there's no knock in the logs (self tuned) and plugs look okay? I try to shift at 6500-7000 to take it easy on the engine. Maybe I'm worried over nothing, but it seems like the veterans on here sometimes eat their short blocks for lunch even with all the right precautions taken.

Thanks for any advice.

Doesn't sound like you'll grande it but you'll wear it down faster naturally. You didn't mention fuel but i'd run a mix just to keep things happy, or e85 if you're on that. Setup fans or a fan switch/timer to keep things running to cool in the pits. Also the gears will go before the engine in most cases. But hows the ol saying go:

There are 3 factors to every track toy - it can be Fast, Reliable, or Cheap - but you can only have 2 out of 3 of these at any given time.

It can be Fast and Cheap, but it'll blow up
It can be Reliable and Cheap, but it'll be slow
It can be Fast and Reliable, bu it ain't gon bee cheep.

Why not get a better o2 in there to control the boost? I keep the boost to around 20psi on track and short shift more like 7k.

11/2017 update: ported the O2 and fixed the boost creep problem

Original post:

Laziness more than anything, especially since I think I would likely need to pull the whole turbo and radiator assembly out to do it. I'm pretty happy with the car as is and hate to mess with it after many parts swaps in the past. This was never an issue on the street or autocross course because it mostly kicks in above 100 mph in 4th gear, except when it's really cold out.

My car runs 24psi up top on the track tune, rev it to 8k. Bigger turbo though, and ball bearing, and running E85. The 1650F EGT you're seeing isn't terrible.

Yeah HPDE with the longer sessions put a lot more heat and stress in the system. Like Dallas said you want to do what you can to get that boost controllable and predictable as well. So it's worth pulling that down to get that solved as opposed to having to pull it down for other reasons IMO.

When I switched to e85 my car ran so much cooler. What fuel you on?

93 octane. E85 isn't an option around here unless you tow (I don't). There is 100 unleaded and 110 leaded at the track, but the only benefit I could see to running that would be reducing EGTs a little with increased timing in the tune. Knock hasn't been an issue for me since getting a ported head and Buschur cams. E85 would be fantastic but just not practicable for me.

Ever thought about a bigger oil cooler? Your tranny upgraded or built?

start monitoring your used oil, will give you a better picture of what's going on - I've done it now for autocross and the few HPDEs I've done, and while I'm only 300-320whp, everything looks great - not much more wear than normal to be honest.

I've thought about a different oil cooler setup in front of the radiator, but 240F doesn't seem bad to me. I change oil and driveline fluids every couple events.

Stock trans, but I do plan to get the TRE 4th gear saver.

Have you tried 10w60?
Most evos in Europe use it on built engines and track focused evos.
