55 pounds is equal to how many gallons?

16 oz =1 pound? so is it 6.8 gallons for 55 pounds? If that is correct then the price for 6.8 gallons of methanol is only 18 bucks where I live.

liquid (measurement) ounces are measured differently than weight ounces (if that makes any sense)

Find the weight of methanol and you shall have your answer [/philosophical moment]

water tips the scales at 8# per gallon, and i would assume that methanol is a little bit lighter, but not much.

55 lbs is 8.3 gallons. Usually sells for about $10/gallon here. $18 for a 55lb drum would be pretty damn cheap.

Which, coincidentally, when you multiply by 8.3, leaves you with 55.

The weight of fuel per gallon depends on the temperature and I believe the altitude. For everyday use it won't make much of a difference, but for racing it can play a role in figuring amount added and fuel mileage. I worked in NASCAR, Busch Series, for 3 years as a catchcan man and gasman and we would get the weight every race when we went to fill the dump (fuel) cans before the race. We used scales to measure the amount of fuel in each dump can. We also recorded the amount the fuel pumps showed when we got the cans filled but they aren't 100% accurate. I was looking through some of my old racing notes and found the base number for the racing fuel we used (Unocal 120 octane) was 6.0 pounds per gallon. Chicago Raceway on 14 Jul 01 it was 5.95 pounds per gallon and Memphis Raceway on 14 Oct 01 it was 6.016 pounds per gallon.

P.S. If anyone is looking for a Gasman for a race team, email me!!!
