Road Racing Classic - Lime Rock Park *PICS*

Lime Rock Park’s traditional Memorial Day weekend for 2004 was bigger then ever. Friday was mainly test and tune. With the rainstorms rolling through it was lucky no races were scheduled. The rest of the weekend was booked with exciting road racing action. The NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch North Series had an 82-lap race on Saturday, May 29. The Mazda Extreme Street, one of the top sports compact, tuner and aftermarket car shows in the country, was held on Sunday, May 30. Last but certainly not least was a host of GT spec races on Memorial Day. With only one day of coverage, choosing Monday was an easy decision (car shows can be seen anywhere & NASCAR sucks) for us. Who can pass up ultra competitive GT spec cars at one of the North East’s premier tracks? Surely we couldn’t! Kicking off Monday’s race lineup was the Formula Ford and Formula BMW open wheel action. The Speed GT Championship followed including top-end sports cars such as the Cadillac CTS-V, Audi RS 6, BMW M3, Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, Corvette Z06, Dodge Viper and Volvo S60 R, while the Speed Touring Car Championship featured sport compacts like the Acura RSX-S, BMW 325i, Mazda Protegé ES, Mercedes-Benz C230, and Lexus IS300. The pair of Audi RS6’s made a good showing with a 1, 2 finish followed by the CTS-V in 3rd place in the GT class. Bill Auberlen won the touring class in his 325ci. The lunch hour was supposed to play host to a drifting event. Sadly this consisted of 2 Nissans, mildly modified, performing a mere 10mins of show till one of them (the red one) blew a motor. Hopefully drifting will catch on more here on the East Coast but it will need a bigger grid and a better showing then that on Monday. With the 5 different types of racing on Monday, a car show on Sunday and the NASCAR Bush North Series on Saturday, the Road Racing Classic held every Memorial Day weekend has a little variety to suit everyone’s tastes.
