Oregon Introduces Bill to Prohibit Sale of Aftermarket Parts

Help,

We need to stop this. As a new bill is soon to be introduced.
We need all to send emails and letters as this could be the end of the aftermarked parts market.

URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT
Oregon Introduces Bill to Prohibit Sale of Aftermarket Parts
At the request of Governor Theodore Kulongoski, the Oregon Speaker of the House has introduced legislation (H.B. 2186) to prohibit the sale and distribution of aftermarket motor vehicle parts if alternatives are available that “decrease greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles.” The bill is primarily focused on aftermarket tires and would authorize the Environmental Quality Commission to implement enforcement regulations, likely based on a rolling resistance calculation.

We Urge You to Contact Oregon Speaker of the House Dave Hunt and Members of the Environment and Water Committee (Contact Information Below) Immediately to Request Their Opposition to H.B. 2186

H.B. 2186 would regulate vehicle fuel economy, an authority reserved to the federal government.

H.B. 2186 could ban tires that may have improved performance, handling or appearance features, based solely on a rolling resistance rating. In addition, this program could easily distract consumers from focusing on more important safety issues such as tire inflation and overloading of vehicles.

H.B. 2186 would force consumers to purchase only original equipment manufacturer (OEM) tires because the program essentially exempts OEM-selected tires and unfairly implies that they are superior to aftermarket products.

H.B. 2186 could prohibit aftermarket parts designed to either personalize or optimize specific vehicle performance attributes including handling, towing, suspension, fuel economy, etc.

H.B. 2186 provides broad authority to government regulators and could limit a range of aftermarket parts currently available to consumers based on the subjective determination of government regulators.
DON’T DELAY! Please contact Oregon Speaker Dave Hunt and the House Environment and Water Committee immediately to urge his opposition to H.B. 2186.

WOW. That is one of the more hare-brained ideas I've seen come from a politician. Talk about the law of unintended consequences. Didn't this guy ever see American Graffiti?

That is just dumb. What do they expect local tuner shop to do for living? Change it to a mom and pop liquor store? That's just stupid.

Be careful with what you say.. Look at us here in Washington and other states with the modified exhaust laws. No one pays any attention and stuff like that gets passed and than we are all screwed. Thanks to guys like supersupra for bringing this stuff to our attention. Now we all need to get our sh?t together and keep stuff like this from happening any further. Damn the man!!!!

I think this just will not pass due to the money that is generated by the aftermarket manufactures...the economy is horrible right now and if they shut aftermarket business down, nothing good will come out of it.

a tuned Evo would have a leaner fuel map, resulting in better gas mileage and better emissions, right? Just wondering if that argument could be used to get past this law (if it becomes law)

Pray that it passes. Seriously.

Then get into a massive bloody accident in winter because it's illegal for you to use All Season tires over your OEM Advans. Sue the ****ing ********* out of the state and retire to Hawaii.

according to the OP (and I have also found this exact wording in several other places on the internet, so maybe it is part of the HB2186 bill),

legislation (H.B. 2186) to prohibit the sale and distribution of aftermarket motor vehicle parts if alternatives are available that “decrease greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles.”
It sounds to me like aftermarket tune is ok, as long as it decreases greenhouse emissions over stock. Don't get me wrong, I am totally against this bill, but it may be the case that it only impacts our tires, which should be enough for evom members to take action. I am sure Les Schwab and any other retailer that sells aftermarket wheels must be pretty upset over this too.
