Hyundai Developing 10-Speed Transmission

The games of one-upmanship continue...

First 6-speed automatic transmissions became common... then I beileve Mercedes came out with the 7-speed transmission... then Lexus came out with the 8 speed transmission...

NOW HYUNDAI IS COMING OUT WITH A 10-SPEED TRANSMISSION!

Lower revs means less consumption of fuel and a step towards meeting stricter emissions standards.

Earlier this year, Hyundai launched an eight-speed automatic transmission in the 2012 Genesis and Equus sedans. They have now stated that they are intending in pushing that marker even further by developing 10-speed automatic transmissions for future luxury vehicles.

Bloomberg News reported that Park Seong Hyon, president of Hyundai Motor Group (the umbrella company of Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp.), said the transmissions will be for luxury models starting in 2014, possibly including the Hyundai Genesis and Equus luxury sedans.

Hyundai’s Canadian sales through August were up 9.2 percent from the same period last year to nearly 93,000 vehicles. Kia’s were just over the 45,000 mark, up a whopping 20.5 percent. Interestingly, both combined under the umbrella company of Hyundai Motor Group, they now have achieved a near on 13 percent share of the light vehicle segment in Canada, which is rather impressive seeing as Chrysler owns 14.9 percent. By the end of the first quarter of 2012, the ‘Detroit Threesome’ may not be showcasing quite the same smiles with a foreigner around to gate-crash their party.

I found it easier to ride a bike at higher REV's.. less torque required

Imagine what a 10 speed manual gear box would look like..

Either

1 -- 3 -- 5 -- 7 -- 9
| -- | -- | -- | -- | ------|
2 -- 4 -- 6 -- 8 -- 10 -- R

Or like a clock LOL.

Probably gonna be some form of flappy-paddle system.

Just remember some trucks are 16-20 gears plus high low and direct n non direct I've always tried grabbing a 7th gear in the evo it would be much nicer lol.

10gears automatic if you don't feel them changing could be a great thing for varrying fuel consumption etc. Better get crazy mpg

At first I thought having a 7-speed manual was stupid... but now I realize it makes sense. Essentially you have a 6-speed aggressively geared "sporty" transmission... then for highway cruising... they put on a really tall 7th gear to lower fuel consumption. So during performance driving you're still gonna be shifting thru just gears 1-6... so it's like what people are used to today. You only use 7th gear for cruising.

Sometimes I with the EVO SST had a 7th gear like that...

When you get up to the Altima, Maxima,Murano, or Outlander With CVT It`s better built and better driving.

I will never buy a Lancer CVT over Stick, and unless its a Twin Clutch, kinda like what VW does with some of their automatics.

Any other car with 2.0 148 hp feels more powerfull and picks up quicker and is quieter than a Lancer`s CVT. 5 speed Manual or Twin Clutch all the way.

Hyundai is really impressive and moving in a great direction. Putting Millions in R&D to make a car better for the consumer. They LISTEN to the consumer and deliver what people want. Next they're going to have a convertible that blows away the Eclipse, 370z,MX-5 Miata, etc. Good Goin Hyundai!
