RRM Axel Back or Custom Cat Back?

I am deciding which route I want to go. I plan on investing in pretty much most of what RRM offers in the next 6 months but I don't understand the reasoning of getting the RRM Axel Back over a custom cat back and Magnaflow muffler. I would assume the custom one would be better performance because of the larger diameter pipe under the car. It is also is a fair amount cheaper.

RRM Axelback Exhaust - $299.00 and I still have to buy a midpipe
Custom Catback Exhaust with Magnaflow Muffler & Midpipe - $250.00

Someone enlighten me I'd love to have full RRM gear, but not going to buy something that has less performance and costs a fair amount more.

I'd suggest going custom, merely because you don't have to use a magnaflow muffler if you dont want and you can get larger/smaller piping etc... more options going custom...
There are a ton of discounted mufflers online... I think I saw the magnaflow that RRM uses for like under 50 bucks...

Hate to bump a post but anyone have any other thoughts on this? Will be making the purchase here in a few days.

If I were to go custom made, I am pretty set on Magnaflow muffler - anyone know what size piping I should get? Also, anyone know any good sites for tips?

Oh and hell, while I am asking 50 questions - Anyone know an awesome muffler shop in Phoenix AZ?

You only need the axle back not a full catback the stock pipe is good enough.

You can still get it custom done but don't raise the pipe diameter.

Listen to this guy, our stock piping is sufficient enough, no need for a full catback.

Awesome thanks guys - Now to contemplate whether I want to buy the RRM one for $299.00 or one at a shop for half the price and just as good :P

I too have RRM and love it. The advantage to the RRM one is that it is a true bolt-on and uses exhisting hangers.

I agree with others that you don't need the cat-back piping. Downpipe is nice though!

get a custom axle back and save even more money mufflier (depending on the brand) can cost you $100 and maybe $30-$40 to get piping made to fit to your car.

and usually with a full exhaust you move up to a larger diameter of piping that can be good and bad. you usually lose low end torque but gain high end HP.

but keep in mind an axle back is mainly for sound, not proformance gains.

could some one enlightin me on whe the stock piping diameter is?

mitsumichael on here did a full 2.5" catback custom and said it was the best mod that he ever did! Ultimate Racing had a 9whp increase with their catback, and like 11 trq. It is worth the bump to 2.5!

Theres one other person on here and on my buddy list, and I honestly forget who it is (theres over 120 on my BL), but they said they didnt recognize crap after they put on their ultimate racing catback and it sounded really loud. I am not contradicting anything you said but im just telling you what he told me.

Also, if you are going the custom route and plan on using an el cheapo EBAY muffler, i would recommend not to. I have to admit it sounded nice (i got mine from a guy "aimspot" or someting like that) but after three months, it literally rusted away and got so loud it sounded like a CRX with a drilled out muffler. You get what you pay for when it comes to stuff like that.

ok those numbers are off...you wont see those kinda of gains from moving to a larger dia. of piping 9HP is and 11trq is to high of a gain on any N/A car, fron just a exhaust. going to a larger piping you wont gain that much torque, mainly because your losing back pressure, you will gain some HP maybe like 3HP at most, but with the large piping thats usually highend HP.

exhaust is usually used for sound and some times look. you get better gains with a exhaust when cupled with a race header. you also get deeper sound with the larger piping.

I am not doubting your #'s you would get on a RSX engine, although Ultimate Racing got those #'s I put up in that post on thier RA. Take it or leave it, their catback has some nice gains.

Yes I know you have to be careful with the muffler choice. I have an inexpensive Ebay muffler and if my girl doen't like it I will make her buy a different one. I plan on getting it done in the spring after snow/salt is gone and putting the stock crap back on for the winter. I still need to get a resonator so gains wont be as much, although we want to be ready for teh turbo kit I will get around to making...someday!
