While we are on the squeaking issue. What would cause my brakes to squeal or grind when I back out of my driveway? My driveway has a serious decline when you are coming out.
rotor rust. rotors are not finished at all and will oxodize over night. take a look at them in the morning. they will have a yellow film over them. wana see a good example? check out my registry and look at the pic of the calipers. the rotors are all orange in that pic =) it wears off after you hit the brakes once and run them through the pads. that would cause the grind.
but they shoulndt squeek until they are getting low. the squeeking of low break pads is a safety feature to let u know they need replaced....but that would happen every time u hit the breaks. not when they are just cold....

Squeaking was a bad choice of words. I know what it sounds like when you need new breaks. Plus, like you said, it would be constant. This is just an occasional grind I guess.
Bigdoggy, 2 things. If it rains, mitsu rotors do rust up quick. That creates the grinding noise and as someone already stated, that will wear off after you apply the breaks once. If it squeaks when you are in reverse, then that has to do with backing up with the ABS brakes. Or at least thats what I've been told. It was discussed awhile back.
i get a few sounds in mine... a break squeak when backing up when its cold out and the car is cold... goes away after the first time i push brake... the suspension makes a few creaks when its really cold... but i think its just settling back from being cold
I'm getting a knocking noise when turning the steering wheel, I think it's a CV joint, I was supposed to bring it in this week, but looks like I'm gonna be out of town.
I get the usual break groan/howl in reverse. Get some suspension creaks. I get the odd knock when I turn the wheel. But it has been -20 to -30 out lately. Every car makes odd noises. Our Volvo makes crunching noises from the front end. Our trailblazer sounds like a semi.
Does anyone else notice, when it is REALLY cold (like my tempuratures) the brakes are REALLY touchy?
BTW the brake howl is caused by rust on the rotors, not the ABS.
