B&M install problems

I recently tried to install the B&M short shifter in my 04 Ralli. Everything was apart I had the factory shifter out. There is one problem, on the top of the factory shifter there is a counter weight or something like that. It is located a little below where the shift knob screws in. The nylon upper pivot piece will not come off because of that weight. I tried a screw drive, it is a *****!! Has anyone done this mod??? Here is a pic of what the problem is.

The only way to get the shifter retainer off is to cut it or to buy it here (or someplace else if you can find it cheaper). Luckily the short shifter kit that I bought came with this piece or I never would have thought of it either.
