57km and a stone chip already on my brand new RA !
Last week I took delivery of my brand new 06 Thunder Gray RA. Drove it from the dealership to a heated garage where it's stored until springs come.
On saturday I went there with my buddys to show the RA to them and I noticed that there's a stone chip on the hood already, at about 6 inches from the edge of the hood
Can't beleive this. This car only has 57 km. I was very careful on my ride home to keep my distance from other cars and not follow trucks and the like... I had heard that Mitsu paint was not the best but now this is just plain silly . With one stone chip at 57 km, damn I just can't imagine what it will be like at 50 000km !
I was seriously considering having some 3M ScotchGuard put on the hood and front bumper. Now I read some posts on this forum about bad paint quality and now I'm not sure the 3M stuff would be sufficient, as this would leave the rest of the car unprotected...
1st question:
The car is brand new, what should I do before it's too late? I'm even considering having the whole car clear-coated !!
2nd question:
How do the dealerships and Mitsu deal with bad paint quality? Do they recognize that these cars have paint problems?
Thanks in advance!

Paint
I think the Mitsu's have crappy paint jobs. I've noticed that on both RA's I've owned. Your right about the touch-up paint - it won't work. I know the autobody shops give out better touch-up paint but you may need a friend for that one. I was going to try the clear coat stuff too on my hood. Haven't yet.

You're over reacting, the dealer won't do anything because its not their fault. There isnt a paint problem either, its not like you drive over 200km/h and it just peels off, that is just they way paint is today; all car companies have to use water based paint because of enviromental laws (or so i've heard). Mitsu paint hasn't been that bad in my experience, and I've driven through the mountains where there is tons of gravel on the road, in fact Im suprised it held up so well.

Off topic: Ralli04 your sig is longer than this thread.. haha
On topic: Welcome to the world of mitsu, the paint is cheap but its not like we're covered for "rock chips and etc" But your best bet is if you're so sensitive about your paint, like i once was just get a bra/3m clear bra. My front end is speckled cause i gave up, but i claybar/wax/polich my car once a month and despite the chips and dings my car is always looking at tip top condition (besides the curb rash on the stock rims/winter tires).
Also i got my first rock chip 5 miles after getting the car... Driving home on the highway an 18 wheeler cut me off and shot a rock about i'd say a cm wide at my car, hit my fender and left a hell of a dent. Wound up repairing it 6 months later when someone hit my fender. Its life, just keep the rest of the car clean haha.

If it was only a matter of stone chips, the 3M stuff would do the job, but there's more to it according to these threads:
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...int+clear+coat
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...+problem+clear
In that last thread one guy (Wrecked) even stated that the clear coat is blended with the base coat... is that true?
First of all, I'll need a little touch up for that stone chip as the primer is showing.
Then I think I'd rather have a real, good, clear coat applied right now than wait a couple of years and do a complete paint job... I think a simple clear coat is easier to apply than a complete paint job but I might be wrong here.
Or maybe I can just wax it, and wax it, and wax it again until there's so much wax that rocks will just stick in it before actually reaching the paint

the first one always pisses you off, but eventually you'll just live with it. can't really avoid stone chips, sometimes some idiot will cut you off and put one clean on your headlight. i should know
like bruce said, just keep it clean and wax regularly it will look great.
