I believe there are 2 styles of filters that will fit on our cars. There is a short stubby one and a longer style. Im not sure about the micron rating on either filter but I know there are 2 filter styles for the 2.4L MIVEC.

Exactly. If you go to the parts counter and ask for a filter, you can get either filter. The parts program lists both. There's really no difference between the two, just different shapes. The *116 might have slightly more filter material. If you buy an aftermarket filter at the auto parts store, it'll resemble the the skinny one. They just used whatever filter was on hand.

I had the same problem. I walked out, opened it and went back in and told him it was the wrong one.

Everytime I go get the filter, I open it right there on the spot.

It wasn't the "wrong" one, just not the one you wanted.

I get the filter that fits a '92 Eclipse GSX. Then I can just pour in an even 5 quarts of oil. No more 4.6 quart oil changes.

I have used both sizes, they're both fine for our cars. Right now I have a huge stash of the fat stubby ones (bought in wholesale since I change oil every 3000K religously.. and even sooner if I plan on going on long drives)

In my dealer, like someone said, we always put 116 on 2.4 engine. Ralliart, outlander and eclipse. The 72 goes on 2.0 engine for lancer es, oz and on 3.8 non-mivec for the endeavor, and 3.8 mivec for eclipse. This is how it comes from the factory... The new lancer 08 (2.0 twincam) and the outlander 07+ (v6 3.0) are using the 72 too.

I'm sure it fits other cars, too, that's just what year/model I look up when I'm at the parts store buying the filter. It's a short, fat filter with the same threads and seal ring as the tiny little thing the car came with, it just holds more oil.
