Bad Strut Bearing

hey guys, i posted in an older thread so i didnt have to create a new one, but had no responses. I've got a clicking sound from the front when im sitting still and turn the wheel. I read that it could be my strut bearing. Someone said to put a screwdriver on the top of the strut and turn the wheel and listen like a stethescope. when I listen i hear noise, but is it suppose to make some noise or be silent? Thanks.

It should be relatively quiet but it won't be completely quiet. Our car doesn't actually have a bearing there; it's just a plastic bushing. To fix, you can either replace the whole top assembly (about $25 per side) or just take it apart and coat the plastic bushing in grease.

Yes, you have to pull out the whole assembly and take it apart.

yes, um, the dealer replaced the strut bearings twice so far on my car, and i will probably get them replaced again under warranty come spring time because its clicking again.

i also had both front struts replaced and will need another one done soon, the front left is starting to make the ol'thumping sound again going over bigger humps and pot holes.

dealer wont replace all 4 struts at once, only one at a time as they go under warranty.

But whats causing these struts to fail so early, do you think new KYB GR2 do anything better. Cause the stock ones r KYB`s too.

Hey otter, you said you can get new upper mounts or grease it up. Do you need to grease up the new upper mount if I go that way or should it be good to install right out of the box?

i doubt it would hurt anything, if you can grease an old one, i would imagine greasing a new one would only impede wear...

Does anyone know if Rockauto's shipping is pretty quick or not? I was planning on doing the install this Friday but not sure if I need to pay the extra $8 for shipping.

i did 4 struts and 4 mounts on my RA in november 2010..i just put them in straight out of the box..i was fine for a while...then after about 3 weeks or so, they started making noise...they made noise all thru winter..now that its spring and starting to warm up a bit the noise has gone away..

i dont feel like tearing it all down to grease it up, but if i eventually have to then i will...i really dont have time for it but if it gets bad enough eventually i will..(in the winter i thought id shoot myself from the noise, but since now its going away i guess im happy i didint..lol)

i would defenetly recommend if you're GOING to do it...make sure u grease it...so u dont have to do it again later...like me..

just had another strut bearing replaced under warranty yesterday.. passenger side front.. there was lots of noise from one day to the next.
these things are built cheap.. dont last at all... once the warranty period is up i'll have to find myself a better solution.
