bell housing houses the clutch and flywheel (or torque converter ). But yes the little gear for the manual transmission speed sensor runs off the diff...the automatic trans speed sensors take their readings from the shafts.
I'm fairly certain the A/T diffs don't have that gear, the part numbers are different between M/T and A/T. On a true helical LSD, that gear gets pressed on, the part number of the gear is for like a 1980's gallant, or something weird like that.

Actually, I was imagining that instead of the AT using the MT speedometer gear in the picture, that it used a sensor to detect the speed of the diff by using the helical grooves machined in the casing. Am I reading correctly that MT tranny's after 1990 use speed sensors instead of the speedo gear? That didn't make sense because yours uses one. That's why I assumed that my AT uses the newer sensor which take the readings off the diff, just as the Speedo gear does, but you're saying the sensor takes readings off of the input and output shafts of the transmission, correct?

The manual transmission uses the gear on the diff to drive the speed sensor, which sends a signal to the ECU, which sends a signal to the speedometer...
The automatic has two shaft speed sensors, one on the input shaft and one on the output shaft. The ECU for the auto uses only the signal from the output shaft for vehicle speed. there are no sensors near the differential in the auto trans.
