Occasional Grinding noise at start up

I keep reading more and more issues with the SST Trannies giving problems to more people as these cars begin to rack miles on them. Im kinda concerned if I should keep this car for the long run. I did my research as best as I could ( and this is definatley the car I wanted) it had everything I needed but I'm now having second thoughts to keeping this car long term.

At times when I start the car I hear a a little grinding noise right after the car fires up. Its kinda like someone who has the starter motor still cranked a second too long after the engine turns over. Its happened about 3 times in the last year. The last one was just this morning.

Any thoughts?

Only one thing sounds like that--- and you hit it on the head. Starter motor is hanging up in the fly wheel. After a while it will hang and stay or kick out and be done with. The fly wheel will over spin the motor and trash it. Change the starter now or wait till it goes.

Guess I will be making an apppointment with my dealer. Sounds like if the starter is at fault it will onlyu get worse in time. I had hear another theory......when you shut the car off the engine stays on for about a second longer than it should. The reason for that is that the tranny has to release all its gears? cogs? (not sure here entirely) before the tranny sits at rest. So.....the next time you start the car the SST is sitting in Neutral ( internally) and you are ready to engage a drive.

We will have to see where this goes. It bites that this is cold only show up more or get worse. Can't see it getting better or going away......

thats not normal at all. if its easy to repeat take it to the dealer.. If it doesnt happen all the time and the dealer doesnt hear it, they will just tell you its normal.

I do not think it is a starter issue. In a manual transmission, if you do not disengage the clutch while putting it in any gear you will grind. Same thing for a automatic. Sounds like the clutches are engaged while it starts and then tries to put it in a gear. This has happened to me once or twice. I have been giving the car about 30 sec while in park before turning it off and have not had this issue since.

I ve heard the ralliarts have a small grinding noise at startup due to the cvt transmission getting the gears in place due to a safety feature where it wont grind gears on start up. Not sure if thats true though....
