Car wont shut off completely..

When I go to turn my car off, it only goes back to the "ACC", and wont budge to the "OFF" position.

Any ideas as to why?

**I've tried putting the car in park, with the parking brake, doesnt help.
**Also tried starting the car, then turning back off, wont work.
**Also tried putting it into gear, then back into park, it still wont work.

I can get the car to turn off, and almost go halfway in between the "ACC" and "OFF" positions, but the car beeps at me when I get out, telling me its not all the way off.{thumbdwn}

steering locked?

You pressed the starter in at ACC then turning it to off while pressed right?

Have you waggled the steering wheel while trying to switch from ACC to OFF?

Also, have you killed a black chicken at midnight? That could do it! ;)

Sounds like park position / shift-interlock switch hiccup

The chicken thing does not work in NA. "Up" here you have to kill a salamander at noon on a Monday. The time is adjusted for DST during the summer months.

Had a similar issue, but not in the evo. It's either going to be that the car doesn't understand its not in park, the shift interlock thing, or what ended up being my problem was the ignition cylinder or some crappy like that. In order to turn the car off we had to pull a sensor. To remove power so the battery disnt die, we just unplugged the whole battery

this happened to me once. It turned out i didnt push it into park far enough. seems theres one spot it can catch before being fully in park (gear position display said P but it wasnt turning off. so just trying pushing a bit further into park.

Also maybe you already tried this but did you push the key towards the steering wheel then turning all the way?

shrtstuff nailed in right on the head......although I've seen it more common on other vehicles usually what happens is your ignition cylinder shifts a little. This is what happened in my uncles also, and I own a Genesis; this has happened in it.

Yeah, I've tried that, and that's the problem, it gets like stuck in between them.

And it is all the way in park, I've wiggled it around to make sure.

The steering wont lock because its not turned all the way off, I'm at a loss here..

I even put a new battery in my fastkey because I'm rubnng out of ideas?

Sidnakit Feb 13, 2012 08:59 AM

maybe the car isnt reaching fully into park

brenner Feb 13, 2012 09:50 AM

there should be a park "unlock" shift on the console somewhere for tow truck drivers to be able to free up the shifter. it will be a notch you flick with a flathead. unlock it, put it all the way in park and take your key out

Press the the button next to the base of the shifter, I can't think of The name.right now, but you have to lift a little cap to press the button, hold the button down and try taking the key out.
