How To: Locate and Install Boost Pill

This junk is easy but I didn't see a How To and thought some people might benefit from this:

1- Locate the vacuum hose; The pill is inside this hose held by a clamp/clip.

2 - Remove the clips or just loosen them.

3 - With a small screw driver push the old pill out and put the new one back in.

4 - Tight everything back in place and voila.

what exactly does that boost pill do?

excessiveboost Aug 7, 2009 01:52 PM

From the AMS web site

Using one of these pills is the only method of boost control that we recommend for any car with the SST transmission (i.e. any EVO MR, or any Ralliart)

"Because of the unique way that the transmission gets loaded, unloaded, clutch released, etc. Manual boost controllers and electronic boost controllers do not work very well on these cars. When using an MBC or EBC on these cars they are very prone to boost spikes and overshooting of boost, resulting in very poor driveability.

The stock ECU in both the Ralliart and the EVO X has a 3D table for defining boost solenoid duty cycle which helps to regulate the turbo speed at low throttle conditions, and keep the wastegate open more and prevent boost spikes and uneven boost."

Can you run the boost pill with out a tune or will there be serous damage done to the car. I am going to get a tune in a few days, do I have to want until the day of the tune or can do a install.

I looked on the AMS performance site and it says a tune is required.

Questions about this Pill

Alright so this Pill looks to be pretty impressive and necessary for anyone who has a RA or MR... If I install this will the warranty be compromised or will everything be okay? Also I see we need to tune our car after this is installed. I am a little new to this whole thing, can someone talk about where I would need to go and about how much $ on average it is to tune a car for this type of product. Also if I install the Pill and add a intake a few months after will I need to tune it again? And lastly, I live near the Wisconsin area.... do I need to worry about the cold weather with the Pill and tune for different weather climates?

Sorry to ask so many questions but I gotta make sure.

Thank you,

There isn't much reason to install a pill UNLESS you have a custom tune that requires it. Unless you know what you're doing, I'd leave the pill alone unless your tuner suggests it.

You can get some cookie-cutter tunes from companies such as AMS and TTP for $4-500, but custom tunes tend to be higher because they require extra time and work on the dyno.

Most intakes will require a new tune. The Injen intake might be an exception.

I also live in WI (Green Bay area) but I've yet to brave the winter with my RA.
