Stock Tires, Midwest Winter?

I know they're not winter tires nor even all-seasons. I'm buying my Evo this week and am trying to figure out whether I REALLY need new tires.

It's an all-wheel drive vehicle (mostly) and where I am we don't get inches and inches of standing snow. It gets DAMN cold and it's not uncommon to have 2-3 inches on the ground from time to time.

I've driven an FWD vehicle in this snow with success on Nitto 550s.

So... ...

How bad are they?

Thanks!!

If all the posts about near misses and crashed evo's with only a light dusting of snow don't scare you, then try them out. Personally, I ordered winter tires today. I'm not risking it.

I'VE never driven in or seen snow but the way i see it is if you have driven in it with the front wheel drive car on nitto's and it wasn't a serious chanlenge you will have no problem with the evo but if it gets too deep i would recomend the snow tires.

If you have a death wish, then go ahead and drive on the snow with the stock tires. There's a reason why Mitsu put a sticker on your door warning about the tires...

BTW, it's not just the snow and ice you need to worry about. The freezing temps will also make your tires very unsafe to drive.

emil.................haha. i know not funny but im surprised you didnt have a post on here yet. anyway dude get the tires. emil totalled his **** going 30 MPH from losing control in snow/slush. go to tirerack.com sumitomo HTR+ on sale 90 bones a piece. so with shipping its 400 for a set of ultra high performance all season tires. not like you have to buy it every winter, youre putting the yokos in the spring/summer. save yourself 400 now but you may lose it my messing **** up seriously. i threw mine on last week.

RaX hit it exactly: It's the temps, not the snow.

This past Thu it snowed in MA. The snow melted on contact, so no accumulation.

But driving the Advans through 33degF wet ...

... remember Fred Flintstone's tires?

The combination of cold and wet made me severely nervous about traction -- and I've driven New England winters on Eagle VRs (on an Alfa GTV6 - RWD 50/50 weight distrib).

Why risk it? Get winter tires, and keep the Advans for when they'll do the most good. (Two sets of tires last longer than one. (mostly))

I have been unlucky enough to drive in a little snow with the stock tires and it is absolutely scary. I'm coming from driving rear wheel drive sports cars all winter, in the snow and the Evo just scared me. I do NOT recommend it at ALL!

They're terrible....even in a dusting of snow.

AutoWeek wrecked their test EVO in a light snow.

There dosent have to be snow on the ground for the tires to fail. If the temps are consistantly below 40 deg., the tires will turn hard like rocks. This will result in no traction even in moist conditions. If there is even a chance of cold temps or snowfall, I would purchase a set of all seasons at a bare minimum.
