AMS's opinion on cutouts?

what does AMS think of cutouts and tuning a car with a cutout. i know if you tune the car with the cutout open, it will obviously not be dialed in for when its closed and running through a stock catback.

for example, i have a 3" DP and am intrested in a 3" testpipe with a cutout right before it mates to my stock catback. so when its opened, its fully catless and basically running open downpipe. when the car gets tuned for the open downpipe and i close the cutout, will everything go out of wack? It has alot of good positives (long drives and quiet exhaust, having a stock catback for police reasons) what would some of the downsides to it..

let me know.. im curious.

thanks!

i run that exact setup... highboost (28) if im on the gas i always make sure its open, i have knock count up to 8.

on 93 (23) i have 2-4 knock count...

nothing too severe either way and its fine. i would log it either way to see what your car can do.

cheers!

Its a good idea in writing but from what Ive seen its nearly impossible to find a cutout that lasts more than a week.

scott,

this is what i'd be running. whats your opinion on this?

i've had it for 8 months no problems, still seals up nicely..

friends been running it for 3-4 years, no problems either...

and a bunch more people i know but they havent had them that long... i was the guinea pig.

they give a lifetime warranty, and from my understanding they actually will replace it with no problem.

cheers!

Before the cat?

Do you have a toggle switch?

Where did you get it put in? Any pics?

Weird.. ive heard quite different about the electronic ones... I might be getting one this year, if I do it will be one like camMCLEAN posted. But I will only open it up at the track and hopefully I wont have to worry about it getting stuck open or closed.

I have had very bad luck with electronic ones but the manual ones work fine. on a stock turbo car you are not going to see much gain if any on a cutout over a good 3" exhuast system.

I'm using ATP's boost activated cutout. A few notes for the easily 'wowed':

- The 'T' pipe assembly that comes attached to it is useless and won't do anything for power. One has to fabricate a proper 'Y' into the exhaust and use it that way.

- The cutout is fed via a manifold pressure line, and begins opening at the onset of boost. This isn't too bad with a LARGE turbo, because it doesn't open in around-town driving.

- Don't even think about using it with a stock turbo. The biggest gain will be noise.

thats the worse one out.... it attracts people because of the price... it will be leaking or crapped out within 4 months, garenteed.....

that unit has given electric cutouts a bad name.
