An EVO X built for the greatest reason of all....

About 9 months ago AMS was approached by a Mr Paul Seto to help us with a charitable project for the 2010 Motor Trend one lap of America race. The car was built with some bolt on's and a basic tune. The owner Mr Barry Stewart and Mr Seto competed in the event and had a blast all while raising a substantial amount for charity. They had so much fun and raised so much that instantly they knew an even more profound effort for 2011 was necessary.

Thanks to the guidance of 2010 mid-priced sedan class winners Chris Wirth and Sean Caron (EVO X) they laid out the ground work for what would be a top class contender for 2011. We were contacted to build them not only a well setup EVO X but one that would stand up to the grueling One Lap of America event.

The primary focus of this project is to raise money and awareness for the Kids with Cancer society. A cause more fitting of help than any we can possibly think of.

http://amsperformance.com/amsperform...withcancer.jpg
http://www.kidswithcancer.ca/

The Evo X will be run in the 2011 One Lap of America event and will be striving to be in the top 10 overall standing. Plans are also in the works to campaign the car as a Street Class entry in the 2011 Redline Time Attack series which typically runs from late February to October and Barry, Sean and Chris will be teaming up to drive and support the events along with assistance from AMS. If time and resources permit the vehicle might also compete in the 2011 Targa Newfoundland rally.

The build is very detailed and here at AMS we are making sure no stone gets left unturned. With such a worthy cause at hand and working with such a driven individual like Mr Barry Stewart we are all really putting our hearts into this project.

At the heart of the build is and AMS power plant consisting of an AMS 2.2 Liter long-block, 750R quick spooling turbo system and all the goodies to go along with it.

The suspension list is a long one but at the core is none other than the industry leading JRZ RS Pro Coilover suspension.

We could not of started with a better palette as Mr Stewart picked up a brand new 2010 EVO X GSR from our friends at Max Madsen Mitsubishi.

On with the pictures!

We just ordered up one of the AMS kits for the X as well.. When you talk about a complete kit that is well thought out and fits AMS was on point with this one!!!

Speaking on behalf of Chris and myself, this has been a fantastic ride with Barry and Paul as well as all the guys at AMS. Besides placing 7th overall and 1st in class in our rookie season on the One Lap of America, the friendship we developed with Barry and Paul was the best takeaway from our 2010 One Lap experience. One thing you realize the moment you meet them is they are both passionate, outgoing, caring guys. It's very hard not to get energized and motivated when you talk to them for a half hour about the Kids with Cancer society. When they asked us to help them build up a project for the 2011 One Lap, it was a no-brainer that it would be a great opportunity to help and build for a great cause.

When we sat down with Paul and Barry to talk about the details and work through how we were going to do a build, we knew there were only a couple of vendors we'd trust to build our concept: one was in canada and the other was AMS. As Paul already was a customer and fan of AMS and their work and with the long history of success AMS has in the road course/track car build world, the decision was made to approach AMS about the build. They were great to deal with and after talking with Eric and Rich, we hammered out exactly what the build would entail.

And now here we are, a brand new 2010 Evo X being stripped and being rebuilt with all the quality, durability, and finish AMS has become known for. The goal of the build was centered around the 2011 One Lap of America but we soon realized a build of this type could be used at other venues and series to help further expand the awareness for the Kids with Cancer society. Once AMS has it complete and we have some time to break it in, look for future posts of where the car will make it appearances.

For more information on the One Lap of America: http://onelapofamerica.com/

A huge thank you to all the guys at AMS that have helped guide this project from the beginning planning to now.

+1. Very nice. Ever thought of building a few for Mitsubishi?

Hiboost Dec 2, 2010 07:03 PM

This coming season is going to be epic, can't wait to put this car through it's paces and help Barry adapt to all the capabilites that AMS has set this car up with. I'm sure it will be a real fight to make sure he gets plenty of seat time before entering competition with it!

We are still shopping for some unique 18x10.5" +15 offset wheels for the car and homing in on custom Forgeline or Volk TE37SL's with possibly a crazy color. The lighter the better but of course they will have to be street durable in order to survive the One Lap of America week in the spring. Still considering options for my own car as I don't want to be too undergunned!

We expect testing on the car to happen soon using a set of 18x9.5" wheels and tires that are Redline Time Attack Street Class spec that Sean is busy boxing up right now. Looks like when you pick a shop like AMS everything comes into place like it should. :D

I love the fire supression switch placement and the rest of the progress on the car!

It's Alive!

Wanted to post a quick update on the car.

The thing is a beast. But a very subtle, very well behaved beast. Last weekend, with a considerable about of effort by AMS to button up the build and get it track worthy, an effort all of us involved can't say thank you enough for, we were able to get the car on track at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch an hour outside of Las Vegas.

First, just to get the car there was a monumental task as AMS was asked to finish the build early, be ready for the track, and arrange to get it from Chicago to Puhrump, NV. AMS was able to get the build done right at the 11th hour only to find that the transport that was arranged blew it and wasn't able to pick it up when scheduled which put the entire delivery at risk. So what to do? If you are AMS, you throw Eric and Danny into the van, load the car up into the trailer, and drive 28 hours to Las Vegas. I'll let them fill you in on all the hijinks that ensued but lets just say it wasn't without incident. Nevertheless, the car got that as scheduled!

Second, once the car was there, it was an immediate superstar amongst the crowd that had gathered. We, the team that had worked so hard with AMS to design and get this build done, were very very pleased at the outcome. The car is beautifully built. Spring Mountain is home of both a Radical and Corvette school and all the folks stopped by at one point or another to give it a look over and throw out some compliments. More came once they saw it on track running at speed.

https://i327.photobucket.com/albums/...ayer/front.jpg

Third, the car is a blast to drive. Martin was able and willing to fly down Saturday to put the final touches on the tune and the suspension setup. His input, dedication to the project, and support is great and I know Barry and Paul were both very very happy that Martin was able to share in the first outing of the car. After he did some hot lapping, Chris and I were able to put it through some shake down runs and once I found the limits, the car is very predictable. I was able to toss it and throw it around and get a very good feel for how it reacts on the Hankook RS3's that we were running on. Put some a decent track time to considering.

https://i327.photobucket.com/albums/...layer/rear.jpg

So Saturday was the TnT on track, and Sunday was pushing the limit to see how the Dragonslayer reacts. After 1 1/2 days of pure pounding, the only negatives was a slight oil seep, a blown CV boot, and some needed adjustments/tweaks. All in all a good weekend.

Big thanks to Martin, Danny, and Eric on coming out for the weekend.

Double Click the video for the full screen capable Youtube link which is available in 720p (you might have to pause this embedded one).

Some high altitude testing of the Evo X in action. It really was hard to beat driving a car like this in Sunny 65-70*F weather in the middle of December! Honestly the school Z06 Corvettes felt like big boats compared to the precise and nimble handling this Evolution X had. Thank you AMS performance for a fantastic build!

Now it's just time for the last few tweaks and a full car Vinyl wrap and it will be ready to compete! I think the biggest challenge will be getting Barry enough seat time before the May 2011 One Lap event so that he can use the full potential of what this car is capable of. Once we get the Racekeeper cameras mounted we'll definitely have some great in car video footage from 3 different angles as well.

This is going to be a great 2011 so stay tuned and come along for the ride! :mitsu:

The Z06 Corvette was still quite fast and the driver knew the course well. It had wide racing tires versus the Evo X's "Narrow Redline Time Attack spec" Hankook RS3 street tires. Also his friend was saying how it was around 600 crank HP and had an upgraded suspension installed as well. Overall we are quite pleased that the first time out the Evo faired so well in the capable hands of Martin Musial. I didn't get enough seat time to really put the throttle down as most of the testing had to be compressed into Sunday. Even short shifting the car at 7k and coasting down the front straight I got a really good feel for the car on the rest of the course and look forward to piloting it again when there is more time. :)

It's still a work in progress and missing a few teeth but we got the website up and running and a place to detail all the adventures we will be putting these cars through this season:

http://www.teamiglooracing.org/

Right now Barry's 2010 Evo X GSR is getting a custom full car vinyl wrap done before having a few more tweaks done by AMS. The holidays have definitely slowed things down a bit over the last couple weeks but tomorrow I'm bringing my car over to STM to map out the preperations on my own car as well.

http://www.teamiglooracing.org/wordp...rcent-view.jpg

You can read up on what is planned under "The Cars" tab on the website, and you can see how the 2011 events are looking under "The Events" tab. I'll actually have some time to make a few more phone calls to see who else we can get on board this year for sponsors and so far people have been awesome about helping the worthy cause of raising money for Kids with Cancer Society. :D

Latest update on all 3 cars for the 2011 One Lap of America:

Time is not a racers friend

I should have more tonight as well with Paul's Suspension and GT30 turbo installed on his 2008 Evo X MR.

Barry is currently testing his car at the Spring Mountain racetrack along with his co-driver after AMS finished all the last few tweaks on the 2010 Evo X GSR.

My own car is under the knife at STM with a new custom GTX30 turbo setup going in among other things. More to come soon when I get the time!

People have been asking me about the FMIC... it's the newer ETS core with 3" outlets so that I can use appropriate couplers to test various cold side IC piping diameters back to back easily. I want to use the smallest diameter piping with my 3" boomba TB that I can get away with and will do proper testing back to back with a full review. :D

Oh and it is anodized blue because I ran over a few smurfs and wanted to be different. :)
