Short Ram Intake and Cold Air Intake

What's the difference b/w a short ram and a cold air?
Also, for anyone living in Toronto, where is a good place to go buy an AEM cold air intake?

the difference b/w a short ram and a CAI are:
1. a short ram is relatively close to the engine ; whereas, a CAI is close to the bottom of the car

2. Since short ram is relatively close to the engine it absorb less cold air ( heat shield could improve it though) compare to CAI

3. CAI has a badside to it....depending on mounting job..... when it rains and you go over a big puddle or something....when the water is absorb through the filter you can say byebye to your engine =)

4. short ram = cheaper CAI= a bit more money

Im getting my AEM cai at the dealership. Was originally going for an SRI but the CAI's only 40 bucks more.

A decent CAI filter can withstand some water ie. rain or puddle splashes...you just have to make sure you get a recharge kit and keep it oiled. The problem with water is when a filter is submerged or near submerged...I have an AEM and i find that as long as I shut my car off in a car wash its fine...Some people dont even do that though so i wouldnt worry too much.

BTW I bought mine at Bolt-on performance in Bolton (30min north of Toronto) i got a good deal because they messed up on the price (supposed to be 450 +tx and i got it for 300 tx in) and i refused to pay for there price error (ahh consumer laws that work)

But there are a ton of performance shops in the GTA...you could pretty much go to any shop and order it.

wow, after reading the various great replies you have given me, I now have to consider both short ram and cold air lol. From what I understand, SRI gives more power in low gears and CAI more power in high gears...anyone wanna comment on this?

Also, is $400 + $60 installation good for a AEM air intake?

Thanks for your replies

An air intake is not worth throwing a whole lot of money into, especially if you have a low powered N/A car because your gains are minimal. Normally you will not gain any low end but the car will pull a little smoother and you will gain some top end. Unless you plan on changing your air/fuel ratios the difference is negligable....but it does make your car sound better.

As for CAI compared to short ram....short ram is not worth it IMO. The gains are so minimal and your low end performance suffers so much that it is not worth it. CAI's will not suck water into your engine unless it is emersed in water. Generally all that water will turn to vapor by the time it reaches your intake manifold.

Hope this clears up some questions a little.

Won't fit because of the tranny. You will need to do some costum piping. I read somewhere that you can relocate the battery as well to make it fit
