Evo8 vs Lightly Mod'd STi - Video

Atlanta Dragway Race Track

Video:

Another short video for you folks. STi had a much faster reaction time than me. His fastest time for that night was a 12.8. Definitely the most fun race I had that night.

Sorry to pester you with questions, but I'm almost obssesive about not beating my car into oblivion, I'm so scared that I'll blow it up, and yet, I keep modifying it! I've had it since Jan 31.... you can see from my sig....I've put in a few extras.

What rpm's are you launching at? I thought I saw you mention somewhere that you feather between 4-6k, slip it, gun it and go, but maybe it wasn't you I was reading.

What rpm's are you shifting at? Are you just dumping the clutch out of the shift? Are you holding the throttle to the floor through the shift? (doesn't sound like it in your vids, but I'm stupid, so I'll ask).

I think you have very respectable times/speeds considering from the looks of your sig you don't have that much in mods (well, the Utec is pricy, but the power can be put down without it).

I basically rev my car to 3k, start slipping it, floor it and dump the rest of the clutch. I start getting some boost pressure before my actual launch. I'm also just dumping the clutch shifting 1-2, and 2-3, etc. No finesse, just dumping.

Your thoughts? I like your videos, I want to do videos as well.

The last 2 were done feathering the throttle at different rpms. The 12.5 race was done feathering from 4k rpm to 6k rpm. To give you an idea of the improvement this made:

fastest time holding revs @ 6k rpm and slipping:
1.934 60'
12.824 1/4 @ 106.44

feathering throttle @ 4k-6k rpm and slipping:
1.754 60'
12.544 @ 107.36

The reason for this is if you feather the throttle, your creating boost while standing still... the idea behind this is if you can generate boost right before you launch, you'll essentially be launching being already partially spooled... rather than holding revs and being in very low boost, or even vacuum. Special thanks to Giovanni aka IHATEPORSCHE for giving me great launching recommendations.

BTW, yes, I have a 100% stock clutch. Thank you for the compliments. Later today, I'll post up a vid of me vs a mod'd STi @ the same track, with me using the 6krpm rev and hold launch.
Yes, that was me and that is my launch technique.

Shifting at 7,200rpm... mentally, I get scared everytime the needle goes past the 7k mark into the red hashes on the tach... I bet if I repainted the hashes white or whatever until 8,000rpm, I'd shift then... heh.

By "holding the throttle to the floor through the shift", you're referring to a method of shifting called "power-shifting" (not to be confused with just shifting really fast and trying to make it sound cool by using the word power)... maintaining full boost without blowing off any of the excess air in the piping... if done right, it can generate very good results... used to do this on a rb20-powered 240 I drove for awhile. However, seeing how weak our transfer cases are already, I'm extremely scared to do this and shock the hell out of the t-case.

No, my mods are not that extensive at all... just basic bolt-ons. What confuses me is I have all of the BR Stg 2 mods, and the Stg 3 FMIC, but I trap a hell of a lot lower than the Stg 2 BR Evo... but oh well.

I guess the point I'm trying to make with my videos is that horsepower and torque are nice, but it's essentially the driver that matters. Good driving practice, skills, and knowledge can be the best mod on your car.
