Why the 6spd sucks at altitude! (vid)

Here's my first in-car drag vid with the new camera. I was just trying to get a cool vid, but in fact, this vid helped me realize how early the altitude is making me shift. I shift by feel, so the shift to 5th is when I feel 4th losing significant power. The move to 6000' didn't just lower my peak numbers, but it severely affected how soon my boost tapers and how far it tapers. The top-end is much weaker, so I had to shift earlier on a tranny that already can barely make it to the 1/4 in 4th.

Powershifting the new Exedy 4-puck

This was my introduction to altitude running a 12.4 @ 109. I was bummed, but the locals were fairly impressed. The 4 cars I ran against:

1) Mustang GT - 16.5
2) STi - 14.0
3) Auto LS1 Z28 w/slicks and skinnies - 14.0
4) C5 Vette - 14.4

That's the great thing about the Evo right? Just slap a few more things on and you'll be in the 11's soon enough lol.

Good job on schooling the other locals though.

Well, not really. I have all the mods needed for mid-11s, but the altitude is too much for the stock turbo. It tapers to 16psi by 7000rpm no matter what boost I run. I've dyno'd at 22-28psi, and the HP/TQ lines become identical at 5700rpm after the initial torque spike. I don't think I can go faster on the stock 05 turbo, but I'll try.

Well then, if the stocker is no good, it seems clear what needs to be done...

1.75

It was a slippery day, so the 60's were off by .1-.2, which didn't help. I was spinning all 4 with the 2-step, and got the 1.75 with the 2-step disconnected, but that's still weak.

The clutch is amazing. I've never been able to shift so easily and quickly in my life. I used to only powershift the 3-4, but now I can do it on every shift, and I don't even feel the gate when it glides by. I certainly didn't expect that from a single disk. My ACT was acceptable at times, but it never functioned like this. The downside is it's much grabbier when starting off in 1st and reverse, but that seems to be improving as it breaks in further.

Thats strange that you burn out more with the 2 step. I hook up good with the 2 step, without it I used to burn out alot.

Warr, did you short shift? You have to think WRC style (where they are restricted). They throw a ton of boost at the car at low RPMs to make 580lbsft of torque (on a similar sized turbo). Not saying you should shoot for that number but follow the concept. You shoud crank the boost and shift at 6-6500. Work in the range that the turbo still has capacity. I'd crank the boost to 30 (or as much as it'll produce) and put on a co2 sprayer (to handle the higher intake temps, monitor them as well) and short shift and see what she'll do.

I think a 12.4 is very good by Bandi standards BTW

Yeah, its just that easy. Stop benchracing Clayton and take it to sea level to prove it.

Scott, I said I have the mods for it. I didn't say it was easy or that I would accomplish it. Why roll your eyes? My comment was harmless, and if anything, was admitting that I'm below standard at this point. Is that so bad?

Chronohunter, you can see by the vid that I'm short-shifting. At sea level, I would shift to 4th right before the 1/8th and then ride out 4th all the way to the end. In this vid, I shift to 4th well before the 1/8th, then shift to 5th well before the 1000'. My boost was already up to 28psi or so, which was giving me extra power before 5700rpm only. Unfortunately, I'm rarely below 5700rpm on the drag strip. This is why I tried shifting early (was going by feel), but it worked until I got to 4th, which then had to go more than half the track while screaming for air at the top-end. I tried both holding 4th and shifting to 5th. The timeslip comparisons showed that even the quick shift to 5th and additional mph slowed my 1000'-1320' elapsed time. Bah.
