I hear what you're saying, but I'm telling you that all those symptoms could still be caused by the clutch crapping out. Right before mine pooped out, all my shifts were tough, it was difficult to get out of gear, and driving the car was generally not fun all around. As soon as wht Exedy 4-puck went in with fresh fluids, it became effortless to shift.

Yes, if you were having ANY shifting issues at all, then it had a severe affect on your ET _AND_ MPH. When I first had my ACT 7k lockout problems, I went from running consistent 12.1-12.2 to running 12.6-12.7. I could no longer shift without thinking - I had to worry about every single shift going into gear, which screws up everything.

Exactly. my first run was a 12.33 or something like that, then I had a 13.4 back down to a 12.2 then back to a 13.6. I know the ACT is garbage for drag but I figure since the tranny has to come out anyways why not just get it built up and be done with it. I have a friend who will let me borrow a car for about 2 weeks so I can pull it, let the car sit in the shop, send out everything, wait diligently for shep to send everything back, throw it back in and never have to worry about it.

It's kinda sad also that ACT won't fess up to the inferior clutch and for Mitsu releaseing a crap tranny. I think it has something to do with quality control at both factorys

Dirk at ACT is convinced it's all single disks that do this and that the clutch is fine. My Exedy 4-puck states otherwise, but I also have only been driving it for a month.

Yeah, I suppose if I could afford to just have Shep build up my tranny/t-case while borrowing a friend's car for 2 weeks, I'd do it. The Tilton + Shep tranny should set you for life. I do have an Exedy Twin Carbon waiting in the garage, but I don't think I'll be sending off the tranny anytime soon.

Dirk knows his stuff. The problem with the ACT clutch that most people get is that it is a full face disc. This means they warp much more easily than a puck style would. The lockout problem is because the clutch is not fully disengaging, the reason the clutch does not disengage is the clutch is warped. You can adjust it out to a certain point, after that it will never fully engage.

Why does the ACT clutch seem to warp so easily I dont understand. On DSMs they have lasted a long time with me. The Evo one didnt last very long, granted I did hot lap it ALOT and slip it heavily on the launches.

Do u think the ACT 6 Puck could cause a 4th gear grind..... aka what people beleave to be a synchro going out? Also i had the dealership install my 6puck awhile ago and i have had this 4th gear grind for a while as well... but i cant remember if i told them to take out the restrictor pill. Tommorrow iam gonna check and see if thats still in there or not. IF it is u think thats causing my problem? Or do u think the act 6puck could be the culprit also? I just hope its not my tranny, either way thx for the help

Well, synchro grind is fairly standard in 03/04s, which is why they have a TSB.

TSB? Whats that? I am not familiar with this abbreviation. I already once brought my car in, when i first got my car (b4 replacing the clutch) for the 3rd gear grind and they fixed the synchro problem then... but now its 4th gear and i know that the 03's have probs with those synchros but i doubt mitsu will fix it this time due to aftermarket clutch (that they installed) So i was wondering if it might be the restrictor pill.

No, the restrictor pill won't make you grind. A TSB is a technical service bulletin that Mitsu publishes when there is a common problem that they recognize as being legit, so they put out instructions for the mechanics.

im curious as to what you guys think about my situation;

Ive had a 5th gear grind since i owned the car. then i put in the act street disk.
after quite a bit of miles on the clutch, my third gear just started grinding out of no where on a regular street drive and hasnt stopped since. no matter what i do, it grinds now. i took the car to the track where i lost my second gear at high rpms. now to recap, thats 2nd 3rd and 5th.

after the night at the track that out of 6 runs, i got into 3rd gear 2 times, i went to a little get together. the car cooled down while i was telling people about my horrible night. then i got into my car to leave and it would not go into reverse for the life of me. finally i got into reverse and left, but what do you think it is? tranny or clutch? because im ready to send my tranny to shep.

Probably the clutch, man. It's much easier to just adjust the clutch pedal than to send your tranny to Shep.

Your powertrain warranty should be 60k miles, yes, but if you have an upgraded clutch, they may deny the claim.

i complained about the problem before i got the upgraded clutch, but they said it wasnt warranty... because when i went about 8 months ago, the guy was a total a$$hole. and said my entire warrenty was void because i had a oil breather. i asked him waht that had to do with my tranny and he grumbled and walked away. it was like somehting out of a movie. i guess i never really followed through with it though. i probably should have though. oh well ill hope for the best. thanks alot for your info.

hey guys, i put a act stage 3 clutch in about 4 months ago. seems to be doing fine right now. should i expect problems in the future? none of my gears have ever grinded, and i get a great launch with it. just wondering if problems arise later on?

oh yeah i meant to ask. i ran my car tonight. i ran a 13.78, which was a horrible run. i have a greddy cat back exhaust, turbo xs boost controller, a cone filter, and a downpipe. i ran a 13.81 bone stock. and i had a good launch, but it wasnt hitting full boost at all. it slacked a lot in the higher rpms. when i left the track though the boost went back to normal. it never slacked off and stayed dead even right below the 1.5 meter. the craziest thing i have ever seen. it was like my car was nervous in front of a crowd. any ideas?
