I'm getting to the far end of my powerband in 4th and would rather extend the gearing a little as opposed to shortening it (I think so, anyway). The 245 could help some with the extra width, too, but I am curious as to who has been using the Nitto 555R on 400-ish whp Evo.

I think some people get confused between the 555 and 555R. Both the BFG and Nitto 555R should be very soft and get very little tread life in terms of driving on the street, but both should be streetable except in rain maybe. I plan to mount whatever I get on my winter rims (17X8 Rota Torques) and just drive them to/from the drag strip. I just need to decide between the Nittos and BFGs...

Hmm, I see Discount Tire Direct has the 275/40-17 Nittos on sale for $150/each. I could probably fit those, but I'm not sure all that extra width is worth the extra weight.

I am in the same boat. Right now I am getting way out of my powerband in 4th and think a taller tire would help. I have been looking at the Nitto 555r's for some time and am about to buy them. I feel the BFG's would be a better track tire but think they would wear our super fast if you drive with them on the street. I had 555r's on my old MX-6 and I got 10k miles out of them. I don't want to swap tires/rims out when at the track.

I have always wondered if the 275/40/17 would fit on the stock rim. Do you think they would fit? I agree about the extra weight of that wide of a tire.

I went with the 555R's due to the size (245/45) that's slightly taller... also the Nitto's have some "directional" tread so if it rains on the way to the track I won't die.

I haven't run the car much on these but I was having problems getting traction on normal tires... went from 1.76's down to 1.65's. I had 40psi in the 555R's to prevent breaking anything so there is room to grow for sure.

Wow, 1.6s even with 40 psi? I was going to be down around 20, haha, since the description says 15-20 is optimal pressure for grip. I would love to get 1.6s with high pressure, because that protects the drivetrain and gives higher trap speeds (less drag).

StreeThisEvo, 275/40-17 will fit on the stock rim but with a helluva bulge. The only reason people use that size on the stock-sized rim is for SCCA A-Stock class where they have to keep stock-sized rims, and they have found that even a 275/40 bulging over the edge gives more grip than a 255/40 or less. Also, they fit without fender mods on the stock rims, which is key for A-Stock, but they may not fit well on a car with suspension that is lower than stock.

I think I'll go with the Nitto 245/45 to get some gearing. I also plan to drive them to/from the drag strip but will slap on the Winter tires when the season ends.

38psi! I wrote it down on my slip so I wouldn't forget. I was VERY happy. Hopefully one of these years I can get the trans fixed (car sitting for 7 months now) and try some 20psi launches.

Well, you don't do it in the drag forum, and you don't sell anything as a 1-post newbie. If you didn't know how to do something or failed when trying, wouldn't you think to read the rules in the For Sale forum first? They're at the top of that forum in bright red letters...

As for this thread, I ordered the 245/45-17 Nitto 555Rs, so they should be here next week. I was leaning towards the BFGs, but the gearing difference is what swayed me towards the taller tire. I don't need less gearing, but rather more...

Good 60s can be had on cheaper tires. I cut 1.67s on Nitto 555 ZRs. Not the drag radials. That was with 35 psi in all four, first time at the track with the Evo. I ran a WRX last year, Evo launches way better. It's all in the technique.

Well I can say this from searching and reading some interesting things. I would go with the BFG's just from what I have read. The BFG's are a great tire, I also read that a member on EvoM DD his BFG's for 30k miles ( Proper PSI of course, and I have no idea why he would... but lol yea )

What I have also read is that the BFG are much more "stickier" then the Nitto. Another intersting thing is that the WIDER is not always better. They said that your trap ( i know your looking for 60ft ) but you trap at higher speeds with the BFG's.

It is weird that I am hearing such different stories though, because when I did the search everyone was set on the BFG's ??

**** DO NOT TAKE THE INFORMATION I JUST POSTED AS FACT****** I would like to find out myself. Just for the knowledge factor

S.

Once again all I did was hit the search button and read about this for about 5 hours or so. I have no experience, never tracked my car, nor ever will. I was just curious as I had the same question as you.

Definitely not the case. Try 35psi on those tires on my local tracks, and you will sit still without moving while spinning until you decide to let off the throttle. At 18psi in all 4 and my limiter set to 5300 (very low), I still burn all 4 through 1st with crappy 1.8 60's, because the launch surface is bare concrete with no rubber or VHT. I used to 1.66s on the stock tires before I moved here, but that was because it was on a track that was sticky as hell.

Again tonight I cut a best of 1.75 (sucky) and went as high as 1.91 on full out non-bog launches. Ever single launch spun to some degree with more spin equaling a higher 60'. I can't wait for my DRs to arrive next week so I can drop my 60' by 3 tenths or so and maybe drop my ETs even more. I went with the Nittos only because of the tire diameter, which will give me more gearing. BFG 225/45s shorten the gearing, and that's the opposite of what I need.

No doubt my 60s would suck on a track like that. Do they not believe in track prep there? What the heck do the RWD guys do?

The RWD guys with slicks or DRs get to run in what they call the "groove," which is the sticky part where they spray VHT and have lots of burnt rubber from burnouts. For street tire cars, they make us launch OUT of the groove on the bare concrete way off to the side. They enforce it heavily, so there's no sneaking in. That's why I've had to resort to actually getting DRs when no high-11-second Evo should ever have to worry about that - oh well.
