'03 Evo's and '60 times

I have an '03 with stock t-case (open diff.) and was just wondering what the best '60 anyone has pulled with an open front diff. and street tires. The reason I am asking is I have been pulling consistant 1.69-1.77's for my '60 times.

I am just curious as to how much not having an LSD is hurting me and how much is do to bad tires and track prep. I am running Hankook Ventus HRII's and the track has a horrible non-concrete launch pad. I am trying to get some low 1.6's or high 1.5's which should put me in the 11.5's on the stock turbo with a mail in flash.

I am using the 2-step which is set at 5800rpm and the quick slip of the clutch technique. I am fairly confident in my driving abilities but if those that are pulling good '60 times want to offer some advice I'd appreciate it too.

I have an '03 and pulled my best 60' of 1.59s a couple weeks ago running the wheels/tires I have listed in my sig. Yes I know 18's with low pro tires are not the ideal drag combo but it works fairly well for me. Keep in mind I'm not doing it for competition but rather just for fun and I like to run the car right off the street like its normally driven. I've made roughly 9 passes in the car this year so I haven't got a whole lot of track time.

Early this spring I made my first 6 passes in the Evo and saw most 60's around the mid to upper 1.6's and some low 1.7's. I had my 2-step set at 5500. About two weeks ago I went back and was only able to get 3 passes in. A 1.66, 1.59, and then a 1.70(bogged on that one). This last visit the only change I made was moving my 2-step up to 5750.

My technique is pretty similiar to yours. Although what I do, is at the start I hold the throttle about 3/4 of the way down or enough to engage the 2-step but not so much I'm building really any boost(flooring it for too long with the 2-step engaged, I build too much boost and get excessive tire spin). Once the tree hits the 2nd yellow I floor it so right as I'm getting ready to launch I see between 6-7psi. I do a quick slip like you and see just a split second of wheel spin before the tires grab and then I'm off. Boost spikes to 27-28psi right away after the tires hook.

As you can see I'm not pulling consistent low 1.6's or high 1.5's so I'm no pro, but I do average most of my 60's in the 1.6 range(and I'm counting my past dsm's that pulled 1.6's running street tires and open front diffs as well). Everything was perfect for the 1.59 60' run. I need to get some more seat time at the track obviously. For me its basically a balance of just the right amount of boost to slipping the clutch as quick as I can without bogging. Now if I could just get my shifting down, especially the 1-2, I could most likely be in the 11's by now.:o

Get good tires and play with your tire pressure.

Tire pressure is huge, it makes a world of difference...

The more I think about it the more I think Im getting to much wheelspin. My best '60 to date was a 1.68 and that was last year before the 2-step. I would just hold it at 5500 and slip it out. Now with the 2-step building 10+lbs at launch I am doing everything I can just to keep the car straight. Maybe next time I'll try launching without the 2-step and then try your method HmanEvo.

On a side note how much of a difference does it make between a concrete launch pad and a asphalt one?

You have to practice at the track. There's no way you can simulate the same traction conditions on the street. I know I had some issues re-learning how to launch my car when I installed a lighter FW. On the street, I would launch it hard and it would hook and take off like a bat out of hell. SAME SETTINGS and technique at the track resulted to major bogging and stellar 1.9x 60 fts purely due to the better bite and traction surface at the track. Go early and make as many runs as possible. The only way to perfect and find the right spot and technique is to do it often. Just like sex. :D

All my racing is done at the track. The thing is the track I race at has a asphalt launch pad and not a concrete one. The track isnt prepped well and thats why Im trying to figure out how much of a difference the pad makes.

BTW are you the same diambo as on LS1Tech?
