Joe Gilk's 4g63 Powered Conquest

Joe's been racing his Conquest now for I'd guess a good 8 years or more. Him and his team have done a super job of building a really nice clean Conquest. They've done all the actual work on the car themselves and the car is always spotless and well put together.

The last few years he's been chasing an intermittent misfire in the upper RPM's that have kept him from running as fast as the car should. Last year I thought I sorted it out on the dyno and ends up I did not. It remained a mystery. The car had run a best of 10.1's I believe. Over the winter the engine was taken out and we went through the 2 liter and updated everything in it. We also went through the head where we made a lo of major updates.

Joe then decided he wanted to have a header built and asked if I'd do a custom one for him. I usually turn this type of work away because it's so time consuming. I like Joe, his father and Rick a lot though and took the job on as long as there were no time constraints. Joe never called or bothered me once! Thanks!

I finished the car up Thursday morning after only a few weeks of it being at the shop. Most of that time was spent waiting on parts.

The new set up consists of a small runner, short runner header using a Tial V-band collector (Thanks Ron from Shearer Fabrication). Attached to that is an FP HTA86 turbo, .86 a/r turbine housing. This is the same set up that is on my RS and I really wanted to try it out on his car. 3" downpipe into 3" catback with a Magnaflow muffler. The kit uses a Tial 44 mm wastegate.

The difference in the sound/feel and response of the car now compared to years past is simply night and day!

I put together a video using my iphone from the dyno yesterday and some antics in the parking lot.

Here it is, hope you guys enjoy it:

It's hard to beat a torque converter and auto trans for putting big torque numbers to the wheels!

These are pretty cool, back in the day, it was the only 4cyl turbo rwd

That is a beast. How are you going to your burn out in the box when it is going to push the fronts like it did in the video? Oh my bad the burn out box has water and you all where on dry pavement. Duh!!

awesome! have pics of this car on my computer for awhile and yes, I do own a Conquest too :)

Yes, the water in the box keeps it from pushing. I never knew it but this car doesn't have a line lock, so it makes it harder to do a burn out!

No trans brake?

David Buschur May 3, 2011 03:47 PM

Yes trans brake but a trans brake doesn't help with a burn out.

Looked like you were just trying to stall and launch it in the video...moving on!
