Dyno Tuning w/ Dyno Flash - case study #4 - Mr. 382 ft lbs!
Continuing on my mission to debunk myths and mis-conceptions, I completed this tune last Friday and, frankly - even I was amazed with the results
On this customer's car he hs making AEM stand alone kind of power with the lost cost, ease of use and totally stock like driveability of the stock ecu
This customer previously had a Works Flash back when the Evos first came out then he switched to Dyno Flash a full year ago and his motor is still going strong. He freqently road races, auto crosses and drag races. His best time to date is a 11.80 in the 1/4 mile. Depsite all this hard use, and using the Evo as his daily driver and commuting car - the motor continues on without any issues or problems.
Here are his modifications :
Works Throttle body
Buschur fmic and fmic pipe kits
Buschur exhuast
HKS 264 / 264 cams
DN Products header
Ferrea valve springs, valves and retainers
The member prefers to remain undisclosed as he enjoys to suprize other evo members here when he zooms by them like they are standing still.
Here is his base line pull from Friday's session. He had added the valve train and apparently that really helped out the low end trq and leaned out the low end a lot. I have seen this same situation with Robi's car when i tuned for the Buschur Stage 3 head
We will need to take away timing and add more fuel
NOTE * This customer uses 100 octane pump gas on a regular basis

turning down the boost a bit for tuning safety - taking away timing and richening things up we find a nice safe starting point. Now we can begin to push the power back and listen and see how the engine reacts.

Things begin to take shape - but again too lean on the spool up - it needs lots of fuel in that area. The larger valves really aide the air flow in that part of the power band where the stock turbo is really strong

Now we have the VE table really starting to be dialed in on this new set up and things will work much faster from here
First step is take care of that little dip on the top end, lean out the whole power band a half point as this customer is on 100 octane and add some timing in certain areas

Of course - here we have reached a great curve and this would prob be good enough for some. BUT - I know there is more power to be found. There is also a little bump you could prob never feel right where I have the cursor. You can see the ecu pulling timing and then adding fuel at that spot. I need to step up the rest of the power band while adding more saftey margin in that area.
More power on the way

We are staring to make some serious power and I am liking the power band from 6000 - 7100 - flat.
The area from 5,000 - 6,000 is giving us some trouble however. More ign timing corrections are needed and the a/f tables need further adjustment.

This car continues to be a little bit of a challenge to dial in perfectly.
Its getting very close and the knock activity is now gone.
Power band starting to smooth out.
The tq which I did not print yet have been up over 375 on every pull - its going to be a fast car

Things begin to take very good shape.
We see that even on the 100 optane these cars like to be rich to avoid knock activity. The stock knock sesnor is evry super sensitive, this is a great thing - it keeps your engine safe and lets it run a long long time. It does make it tricky to tune some of these cars on occassion. I just take my time, taking as long as I need to get the job done properly.
Here we are prob a tad on the rich side - but with a lovely curve and the engine running smooth as can be.

A couple of small corrections later and now we are ready to see the finshed product.
This evo is really making some serious power here - loads of low end grunt and super smooth

Here is yet another final job I am very proud to have my name on.
In this case we have stand alone power from a reflash and no stand alone head aches. This car drives just as a stock car - only better.
The test drive was insane - the spool up is violent and the power band is silky smooth.
You can see from the final sheet with a/f and both curves when you dial in the car perfectly - everything falls into place nicely.

Sadly the owner reports that there was TOO much TQ ! - If you can ever have too much TQ for his auto cross needs. Now he is switching over to the Toyo RA 1 tires so he can try to put down some of that TQ on the ground !
I run the 255 40 17 RA 1 on my car and it holds 500 ft of TQ no sweat on the road - can't beat those RA 1's
