1. take out filter clean in sink with dishwashing liquid and warm water.
2. let dry and then coat outside of filter with light coating of filter oil.
3. reinstall filter making sure you have a good fit.
I never have any dirt inside of my intake.

The best kinds are the dry cotton type and second is the wet(oiled?) type. Get the Dry cotton (K&N and a few others make them too) filters like those from BR and AMS and such.
So there you have it.. HKS RS is really a Ricer to Filters as VTA BOV to Recir valves. :}

a catch can is not going to help a heavily oiled/dirty MAF sensor - that comes from age, and lack of care in changing/cleaning the air filter - it does help though
On the HKS filters they need to be changed every 10k miles or so - very few people actually do this.

The best way is to wash filter, allow to dry, soak the filter in air cleaner oil, squeeze out excess oil, allow to dry, reinstall. If there is no oil the dirt won't have anything to stick to and if the particles are small enough they go right through.
I've used this product for a few years in my off road equipment and it's simple as hell to use. http://www.notoil.com/

I think the catch can can help reduce oil build up if you start using one from day one
