I never have any dirt inside of my intake.
What if you don't coat it in filter oil?

It is good I have one on my car. I am in dusty LA location too. It filters out pretty good( From 1 yr use). I doubted the SUS filter about the filtering when I bought it but it turned out to be pretty good. no dust or oil at all. I think most of filters are oiled. and paper meterial gets destroyed if you don't change it soon enough. this stanless steel filter doesn't get oiled nor destroyed. All you have to is just wash with the water and it seems to last forever.

The best kinds are the dry cotton type and second is the wet(oiled?) type. Get the Dry cotton (K&N and a few others make them too) filters like those from BR and AMS and such.

So there you have it.. HKS RS is really a Ricer to Filters as VTA BOV to Recir valves. :}

a catch can is not going to help a heavily oiled/dirty MAF sensor - that comes from age, and lack of care in changing/cleaning the air filter - it does help though

On the HKS filters they need to be changed every 10k miles or so - very few people actually do this.

Thumbs up dirt

Picture the foam filter like a maze of fly paper and the dirt as flies. The fly paper has to be sticky to catch the flies and when the paper is full of flies there is nowhere for the more flies to stick. The filter must be washed and new adhesive applied. Without adhesive only the big fat flies get caught in the maze. The filter oil acts as an adhesive you can't use motor oil for example. I've been using foam filters for over 30 years, they work but they do need regular maintenance.

The best way is to wash filter, allow to dry, soak the filter in air cleaner oil, squeeze out excess oil, allow to dry, reinstall. If there is no oil the dirt won't have anything to stick to and if the particles are small enough they go right through.

I've used this product for a few years in my off road equipment and it's simple as hell to use. http://www.notoil.com/

Does the Apexi filter bolt right up to the HKS pipe or do you need a certain kit?

The green HKS (super mega flow) done in the test is different than the standard RS foam filter. The standard will filter more.

true - most are never changed

I think the catch can can help reduce oil build up if you start using one from day one
