Installation and Tuning for Perrin EBCS...

Has anyone installed and tuned the Perrin EBCS.

I have a friend who has just installed it and we were unable to tune it. I'm not familiar with this unit at all. He followed the instructions and installed with with no pills.

After many, many attempts on the street we weren't able to alter the boost at all. It was consistently at a 280 load.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi

Try talking with the user GTODesign on the Mitsubishi Lancer Register http://www.lancerregister.com/ he has a Perrin setup on his JDM7, he also posts at OpenECU as well.

What boost were you hitting? What values do you have for wastegate duty cycle, boost desired engine load, offset, etc.? What did you try adjusting? Need more info! Hard to diaginose a problem when all you say is, I have a problem.

We were trying to tune my car.

If I remember correctly we had boost targets of 240 and the car would still hit 280-290 load for just a moment and then tapper to 260. We had the WGD cycles set to 50 on the entire table. This was in 3rd gear and the load was hitting 280 by ~3900rpms.

I followed the instructions provided. One port goes to the turbo, one to the wastegate, and the third can be left venting to the atmosphere or can be plumbed back into the intake like the stock bleed vacuum hose...I plumbed it back to the intake. I had the GM 3-port solenoid on my WRX and installed in the same manner.

Edit: the car also held ~21psi close to redline.

It should be as simple as reducing the wastegate duty cycle in the rpm range where you're hitting too high of a load.

Yes, you need less WGDC, unless you already tried that. If so the EBCS is hooked up incorrectly or faulty.

Try 20% WGDC across the board and see if you underboost.

i didn't try going that low, i set them to 40 to test for that and they still didnt drop below 280 load...

with all the changes we made, 10 different attempts... there was not one difference in max load. That was the puzzling part.

I've read every stock bcs and perrin thread on here and no one has had the same issues we've had.

Sounds like a faulty solenoid then. Did you also change all 3 WGDC maps?

yep i always adjust all three areas together

From what I understand, the Perrin should have a path that is closed to air bleed, so you could blow in one port anf there would be no air flow, if you connect the pipe from the wastegate to that port and don't connect the Perrin to the ECU, that should give you a starting point.

Alright, I messed around with the car for ~2.5 hours today and got nowhere. I put all 3 WDC tables to 0 and still hit ~290 load. I've lowered the boost targets a lot and the boost correction to 60 and still hit ~290 load.

The car behaves as if it's been tuned to run this way. It hits a high load at around 3500-3900rpsm and then tappers and seems to hold steady boost. I don't think the EBCS is broken because then it would either run WG pressure or overboost like crazy. I'm going to double check the installation but I don't think this is problem either.

Here are the screen shots of my current map and the resulting logs. Notice that whenever I hit 100 throttle, my WDGC also hits 100 even though it's set to 0. The car also has minimal knock and the AFRs are fairly safe.

Very puzzling, any help is appreciated.

Note: I changed the fuel map and it did have an effect, but boost changes seem to have a mind of their own.

well, at this point it's either:

1. Hooked up wrong (not likely as you would be running either unlimited boost or wastegate boost
2. It's faulty

Your BDEL maps are totally incorrect btw. Actually they make no sense at all. I'm still trying to get my head around what exactly you where trying to do there.

Wastegate Solenoid Activation RPM-Active should be 281, not 2000

Do you still have your stock solenoid that you can put back on to see if it is indeed a faulty perrin unit?

Sweet easter ecuflash colors btw. ;)

BDEL and WGDC should look like this example:

subaruwrx420 May 20, 2007 07:41 PM

^^Well, I tried to lower the BDEL in the lower rpms to attempt to lower the boost gain of the car. I also tapered toward redline for the same reason. In the midrange I left it a little more aggressive.

Unfortunately, I damaged the vacuum lines of the oem bcs when installing the Perrin unit.

We changed the WG soleniod activation because the car was hesitating in the 3000-4000rpms range and it went away after changing the 281 to 4500. I lowered it afterward to 2000 to see if it would make a difference in the boost gain but it didn't.

Yeah, those colors helped me see the values in the sun :D

subaruwrx420 May 20, 2007 07:53 PM

I also messed around with the Turbo Boost Correction Table. Initially had all the values to 0 since it supposed to be easier to nail boost targets. Then I decided to increase the negative values as shown below to allow the ecu to reduce the boost if the targets are being overshot. Once again, the changes had no effect.

That's still not the correct way. according to those maps you are targeting a load of 163 before 2500, 193 load 2750 to 5000 rpm and and 155 load after. That would be one slow evo. ;)

You use WGDC to set the boost level at each RPM and BDEL to regulate the target boost depending on load and rpm.

Say you want to run 22 psi at 4000 rpm. Let's say it takes 62% WGDC at 4000 rpm to hit that target. Now, let's say hitting 22 psi at 4000 puts you into 260 load, that means BDEL at 4000 should be 159 and Boost Control Load Offset should be 101. 159+101 = 260.

You do that for each RPM point in the tables.

Either way, if everything is hooked up correctly hardware wise, it really sounds like you have a faulty solenoid. Have you tried contacting Perrin?
