GURU's please look...36 knock counts!!
Ok so myself and several others think that this must be a bad knock sensor. I am reading extremely high counts of knock, but only on partial throttle. It will sometimes do it under stationary revving. Its not consistent in any of the occasions and will only do it under heavy throttle if it starts to knock before full throttle. On full throttle runs I am getting 0 knock. I have checked for any exhaust rubs or any ic pipe rubs. None. This is like other instances of phantom knock but it occurs all the time and at higher counts than I have seen. When it happens I can simply back off the throttle completely and then throttle up again and it will usually go away. I cannot post the log because it is too big...I know it may be a hassle but if you have any idea post or pm me your email and I will send a log of the issue.

Do you have a built engine? It is most likely phantom knock and not much you can do about it.

nope all stock internals except for hks 272's there has got to be something...its almost undriveable because of it.

Start with changing the sensor. Ive had this happen on a 2g and thats what it was.

tyrr changing the knock sensor first. from what i hear they can be a pain (havent done one myself yet). atleast with a new sensor in place you know where to go afterwards.
have you looked at your fuel and timing maps? |

Check for backpressure problems -- particularly the cat.
Were I you, I'd also look at the motor mounts and tranny mounts and triple check that nothing is hitting the drivetrain or exhaust. Good luck! |
You may want to look at other metal on metal surfaces that may be setting it off. My Evo had a similar problem and it ended up being the small metal clip for the injector harness that was missing the bolt that holds it to the valve cover. The dam metal clip was hitting the valve cover and causing random knock counts. Hope this helps.

Things to set it off under the conditions you describe:
Bad knock sensor (covered) Bent rod Clutch either going or a noisy one installed. I have heard tiltons will do it, seen an exedy or two, etc. Balance shaft out of phase or removed (you said stock bottom end so I dont know if you count that or not) Something rubbing (covered) Exhaust leak What do the plugs look like? Deposits or any discoloration? Are the spark plugs all tight? Whats the gap and is this in meth? |
plugs are normal, no deposits, were changed last week, and compression test was done yesterday so i know they are tight. The gap is also correct and I am on pump without meth. Compression test was 172, 168, 169, 172 The clutch is an ACT HD and it is noisy, so I am beginning to think it is either that or the lifters because they are noisy. But the lifters were bled properly on install so idk.

36 counts of knock should be heard during driving! make sure if they are real knocks by that!

Ok so I got the car up in the air to take a look around some more. I have checked for exhaust hitting anywhere...none...can find any broken motor mounts or anything hitting on the tranny. I did however hit oh the bottom of the ic and it was rattling somewhere in the front bumper so i took it off and thats where im at right now. It was definitely metal on metal so do you think that could have been the source of my problems?

I have been going through the same problem with my Evo7 GT-A. Been over the car so many times I know it intimately and we are now officially dating. Auto, so no clutch noises, no mech noises anywhere, compression also perfect, stock exhaust up until the differential, stock everything. Also caps out around 36 on the knock and will do as you report.... pull all the timing out of it and drive like a piece of crap, and I too can make it happen just free-revving the motor. Temp solution for me was to plug another sensor in and attach it to the rocker cover. Not a fix, but it gets me going until I can sort out the issue. I am a tuner though, so I trust the tuning anyway.
The thing with the knock control is that it is not just any noise, it needs to be at a certain frequency and amplitude to cause it to false trigger. Next for me is to try the alternator and water pump. It needs a timing belt anyway. |
