Stock Evo 9 IDC's

I knew this awhile ago but I never posted anything about it. Self tuners here that have logged their stock 9's (when they where stock) probably know this as well but it's good information anyway.

A stock 9 runs very rich up top (10.2-9.8 ) AFR, thus it also runs very high injector duty cycles.

Here is a comparison of IDC 100% stock and after my base flash:

http://www.norcalmotorsports.org/use...les_080508.gif

Just a wee bit better. ;) Base flash running 11.0 AFR up top, stock flash was running approx 9.8-10.2

98% IDC compared to 80%.

This was a 100% stock Evo 9, on 91 octane, with the factory flash. My base flash is not a custom tune, but it still made good gains:

Runs less timing up top (stock timing maps knock on 91 octane). Boost is 100% the same between factory and base flash as wgdc is maxed out stock.

The biggest gain with my base flash was 6600 rpm and up, where the factory map takes a nose dive because of a very rich AFR. In this case, it is a 47whp gain going to my base flash over the factory map. Peak torque gains of 22wtq, approx 37wtq up top and a large gain to spool over the factory map.

Again, this is a 100% bone stock Evo 9 with the only mod being my Base Flash.

And three pulls back to back with no cool down to verify the base flash was consistent:

Nice, Bryan. I've seen this in every IX that I've tuned. I can also easily max out the stock injector's with an 11.9:1 AFR and 25 psi. I always recommend 750cc injector's to my customer's with IX's even if they will never upgrade from the stock turbo.

Nah stock injectors are ok... :)

Now fit a gm3port to that IX and bump the boost up a bit :)

I've done a bunch of stock 9's with our boost assembly (oem line and upgraded pill) and a flash and they usually gain another 30whp/25wtq, usually making around 270whp/265wtq on our dyno

The 8's usually need a TBE, boost control and a flash to make that power on our dyno.

I still think the 9's are the best Evo's yet. I might change my mind after I work with the 10's more. ;)

Its amazing how much the lean spool disable at 7000 rpm richens the AFR.

yea those IDC's jump up at 6900-7000 like they are shooting for the moon.

25psi on a stock turbo at 11.9 was maxed? Wow, must be some good air. I think the most I saw on mine on the stocker with stock injectors at that level was 93-94%. That was with pipes, 3" TBE, and an HKS 280 back when MIVEC was young...heheh

25psi not at redline thou :P

do you guys get spark blowout at 24psi+? (obviously I could regap them but meh!!!)

I've run 28-29psi on a bunch of 9's with no breakup on stock plugs and ignition.

JohnBradley Aug 6, 2008 10:45 PM

Thats where the break up usually seems to start happening if its going to and generally gets more aggressive the higher the boost. .020-.021 gap usually cures it right up though.

Nah it was 25-26 peak (about 285-290 load) dropping to 220s by redline (so probably 21?)

I didnt orignally start having problems till about 30 on racegas

RazorLab Aug 6, 2008 10:48 PM

I just recently started having some breakup right at peak boost after upping my boost from 28 to 30psi. But not all the time. I am beginning to think my stock coils are getting weak or something from all the hell I have put them through, or I have a boost leak

tephra Aug 6, 2008 10:53 PM

lol you guys are crazy :)

Yeah, no kidding. That is horrible.

Might be plug wires, from what I have heard they wear out way before coils.

I have been lucky to not have any breakup so far. I have gone as far as 31-32 psi on meth with no problems. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

To me, anything over 90% IDC is maxed. I don't like the idea of injectors going static on a customer's car. On my car, I don't care as much.
