Pulled my first logs from my tune but looks Ef'd up?

So after spending almost $1,000 on tuning recently and still not completely satisfied with how the car pulls (hiccups at times during WOT pulls) I decided I needed to invest the time and money in the required hardware/software to educate myself and check on how the car is performing. I pulled my very first set of logs today and was surprised to find that my final road tune is showing up to 6 counts of knock at times and other pulls are showing knock around 4800 rpm and again rising to 6 counts of knock as I near redline?

I understand that 1 or 2 counts are OK in some opinions but this doesn't seem like a good state of tune for my car, correct? I studied the "How To Tune an Evo" thread and watched several how to videos and I'm under the assumption that 3+ counts of knock is pulling timing/losing power and maybe this is the "Hiccups" I feel during the pulls? I'm not logging boost yet (Omni 4bar sensor ordered) but the car is set at 27psi and has not been touched since it was tuned, the boost gauge runs up to 27psi during every pull and stays there...these are 3rd gear pulls.

I'm going to contact my tuner to see what options I have but please take a look and give me your opinion or advice!!!

Also if I need to log more items to make sense of the data please advise...

Thanks :usflag:

Your pulling timing hard on the top..You need to pull back a * or 2 depending of the 1* doesn't solve your knock issue..And who tuned it?The weird thing is that your timing is not aggressive..

AWD...I tried to call them today and also sent an email so maybe they can walk me thru it or offer a solution. I'm so new to tuning I'm worried about making adjustments to the map.

Knocksum is actually degrees of timing pulled, but I'm guessing you already know that.

I advise taking the MAP down. posting purchased maps isn't authorized. pretty sure if you get in touch with diiirk he will help you get it taken care of.

There's no map up there...

Err, no it isn't?

For every 3 knocksum, 1 degree is pulled.

He didn't post the map, just the log.

EDIT: SyZyGy1394 beat me to it

And to the OP, like toysgetsmoked said, pull 1 or 2 degrees up top and make sure the map stays smooth and see if that takes care of the knock.

Yes, I'm not posting any maps. I've read the "Sticky: Do Not Post Vendor Purchased Maps" and understand the reasons. Hoping to get some advice from the community experts and waiting to hear from my tuner so I can make the changes or they can help me.

Look at entry 27-30 on the first log. On line 27 its at 9 degrees and attempts to pull 2 degrees, which it does on the next line, which puts it at 7.

its not a map, per se, but its shows something that most *wont* show, and thats timing... AFR looks ok, timing seems to look ok too, (minus the knock)
the knock isnt terrible, not gonna blow up your car. Tune just needs a street tune massage, and Im sure AWD will take care of you.

I agree with everyone, you just need to make sure your cells are smooth in the timing map, especially during spool up when going WOT. The 6 count cell near the end could be lift off knock from going WOT then suddenly releasing the gas pedal. I have seen this on my car on a few occasions, I have heard it is prominent, especially in the IX's. That last map looks nasty with the knock in the higher load areas. You just have to pull a degree of two or timing and see if it decreases or not. I also agree with the poster above that says 5-6 won't grenade the motor, but still, if you shell out that kind of cash for a tune it better be damn impressive and 5-6 counts on WOT pulls is far from it. Best bet is to call or go back to AWD, they should be able to take care of everything for you.

What are your mods and what turbo are you running 27psi off of? From the timing I would say this is 93oct yes?

Then why is 1 degree pulled in this log (mine) when I hit 3 knocksum?

Every tuning guide I've read has always said that 3 knocksum = 1 degree pulled (technically it's 1 knocksum = 1/3 degree pulled, which is why timing can be pulled for just 1 or 2 knocksum depending on the interpolated timing value). Did that suddenly change?

That is how I always understood it also. I know it was the case in DSM's too... 1 degree is pulled for every 3 counts or close to it.

I just did a search and came up with:

There are two ways that the ECU will pull timing. They are additive as far as I know:

1. Roughly 1* of timing will be pulled per 3 counts of knock.

I don't know if this is completely disassembled in the EVO ECU, but this is how it works in the DSM ECU and from every log that I have seen from my car and others, it seems to hold true for the EVO ECU as well.

2. Octane number.

The octane number will begin to decrement at 6 counts of knock and above. The amount that the octane flag decreases determines how much weight the low octane map receives. For example, if your timing in a particular load/RPM cell is 20* on the high map and 14* on the low map and your octane number is at 50% of max, or 128, then you will get 17*.

Think of the octane number as a long term knock trim. Think of the 1* per 3 knock count logic as a short term knock trim. Both of those corrections will get you your final timing numbers.

that is from: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ec...ing-knock.html

An old thread, but still has good information.

What is your timing advance at 5500rpm and 250 load on that timing map?
Also, how different is your low oct timing map?
