Simple SD question

I searched around about SD alot. Lot of discussion about tuning but not about benefits. I understand that one major benefit of going SD is when your are at the limit of the MAF and/or its becoming a restriction. But what about a 350-500WHP car, thats not necessarily at the limit of the stock MAS.

So what are the benefits of SD?

EDIT - Well heres what the thread came up with, if you wondering.

-Removal the airflow restriction of MAS, adds 10-20whp on a 350whp car

-Lumpy cams or a light flywheel (or both) that dont like to idle can be cured.

-Minimal off throttle jerkyness/ eliminate liftoff knock

-Small boost leaks are no longer much of an issue; Major I/C leaks, turbo failure, etc. are no longer a "limp mode" event; you could drive the car N/A, and it should still behave like a real car. (DOWNSIDE - a major leak can go unnoticed)

-You can add on a non-stock intake without having to mess with MAF tables

-don't forget vta bov lol (avoid the ricer reason. )

If anyone has an additions or edits, let me know.

Minimal off throttle jerkyness, from what i can tell the MAF somewhat surges and causes uncomfortable jerking (TWSS).

I was getting liftoff knock and jerk which made the car not much fun to drive. It is worth it just to get rid of that. I also noticed slightly faster spool which I know is a bigger deal with my older style turbo than it is with your newer nifty twin scroll pieces but it is still a nice perk.

Major I/C leaks, turbo failure, etc. are no longer a "limp mode" event; you could drive the car N/A, and it should still behave like a real car.

In fact, small boost leaks are no longer much of an issue; throttle body shaft seal leaks, that noone seems to be able to remedy for long, are automatically compensated for.

The downside to this, of course, is that a major leak can go unnoticed, meaning you end up spinning the crap out of your poor little turbo to achieve the same boost levels. But maintenance and inspection should be part of your routine already anyway.

I think we were all trying to avoid the ricer reason.

You can add on a non-stock intake without having to mess with MAF tables in the ROM?

Buschur claims an average gain of 10-15whp on a 350whp car(on his dyno) when he removes the MAF setup and goes with the AEM EMS with MAP. Just throwing it out there since he seems to feel that it free's up the restriction even at moderate power levels (compared to cars who are exceeding the MAF's flow these days).

Yep, I suspect that ditching the MAF and the stock intake tube is worth 10-20 whp on a 350 whp car. I think we'll get more info on this as more people do full SD conversions.

Besides removing the air restriction of the MAF, what are other benifits

I think all of the reasons have basically been answered already in this thread.

Did you also remove the MAS? Or did you see the increase in spool with the MAS still installed?

I've heard both good and bad about the SD conversion. Not really bad persay but just more of a pain to tune. Is this correct? are there any CONS to doing this?
