Interesting Day On the Road Dyno

So I am having fun tuning my new 74170715 ROM on the "road dyno". Getting my WGDC in manual mode dialed in. I am on the highway doing a 3rd gear pull and I decide to do a 4th gear while I am at it. Everything goes well, perhaps a bit too much WGDC for 4th vs 3rd but no big deal.

I get home and go into the garage about an hour after the runs. I smell something that I think is gas...I go back later to pull out my mini battery to charge it. I open the hood and I notice oil in the back of the engine compartment. I also notice that my dip stick is up (not seated down). I put the dip stick back in and notice that I am down 1/2 a quart from where I was before. Look underneath the car and oil is there.

Anyone ever had this happen? I am not running crazy mods, stock turbo, no cams ,etc. The dip stick has felt somewhat loose. Form the log I did not hit a crazy load number or boost. I guess I need to get the dipstick clip...Strange.

Isnt there a spring or something to keep it in place?

No, but you can put a spring on to hold it down. I wonder why you had enough crankcase pressure to blow it out?

its happened to me before, but that was because i had just put on a very restrictive catch can on that i promptly removed. :/ I use a spring that i got from home depot to hold the dipstick down now

Your PCV valve is probably leaking boost.

Putting a spring, etc, on the dipstick is just a band-aid cure. You need to find the root cause of why you have excessive crankcase pressure in the first place.

I bet the PCV is clogged. Pick up a new one form the dealer...The ones at the auto parts stores leak like crazy.

Also, if you have a filter on the right side of the valve cover....you might consider running the line back to the intake suction tube to pull out excess pressure.

Both of these are reasons for dual catch cans.

Yes, I have had this happen and I am running a very similar setup to yours, stock turbo stock cams,ect. When it happened to me, I had just done an oil change earlier that day and I cam to the conclusion that I did not replace the dip stick all of the way. It only happened once. If I were you I would just check the oil level, make sure the dip stick is in all the way and go drive around and get on it a little and see what happens. Hopefully it was just a one time freak thing. Good luck.

Common problem since the 1g DSM. Much worse since they switched to plastic tipped dip sticks.

Take the recommendations above to remove pressure from the crankcase and you should be OK.

Had this happen at the track once, ever since I installed a small hose clamp around the dipstick holder and zip tie the dipstick down. No reason to risk it.

It's happened to me. I drilled massive holes in my valve cover to run larger diameter breathers, and put a spring on the dipstick.

Update. The PCV valve was clogged. Take it out and see if it rattles. If not replace.

Put slightly bigger o ring on 7mm ID and 11mm OD.

Also got a spring from the hardware store. Took some bending to stay on the dip stick support.

All good cures for dreaded crakn case pressure...which will also make the turbo leak oil into the exhaust housing if it gets out of hand

Ding, ding....we have a winner!

Get in the habit of replacing the PVC as part of normal maintenance. Oil and heat lead to junk build up inside them. In addition, the hear also causes the spring to lose tension over time.
