Check my 2.3 timing

Hey Guys,

Just getting an input of my current timing,

28psi @ 4750rpm 93oct (U.S) 4deg ramping to 8deg by redline

Listening with det cans, i hear no det, the car was on the dyno for about @ hour and was making good power but the very last run i added 1 degree so from 3 degrees at peak boost to 4 degrees and i lost 5hp, im putting it down to heat soak, thoughts?

I ran out of time so i pulled it off, but i have had this before and when i have time to cool it down for 20min the power should increase again.

here is the log,

we just tuned an Evo9 GT on the dyno and it made 300whp.
We were using the Knock gear, and could hear NO detonation on the Det Cans.
It was still getting knock counts of 12 when you lift off the gas at the end of the run.
Did you check the knock sum? your map says 5deg ignition timing but your MapTracer says 4deg...

That seems like way too little ignition at 7k, even for a 2.3L

What compression is it?

What boost at 7k, what turbo?

Yeh i know there isnt enough timing up top, the tune isnt finished yet

Knock sensor atm is turned off while im using det cans to tune

I was more worried about running 4deg @ peak boost but its at 4750rpm thats ok right?

@7000rpm boost is around 26-27psi, i still need to tune my WGDC so it holds boost better

My main question was the 4 degrees @ 4750rpm 28psi thoughts?

Compression is 9.0:1

Oh there was no signs of det when listening to the knock box

Oh and i think the slight variation from the requested timing to actual timing was the AIT i need to move my intake it gets heat soaked badly

what other people think, and what the engine requires are two different things.
if you are tuning with Det Cans, you are one step ahead of 90% of the tuners here anyways.
My 2.3 engine would only take 4deg timing @ 7000rpm until i changed out the intercooler and the mufflers. It then took 8-9deg @ 7000rpm.
Each engine and setup is different. Just test and log and compare.

Yeh i agree,

I was just thrown off the by the fact i added 1 deg of timing and lost 10hp but there was no det and you cant hit MBT on 93 without det.

Im putting it down to the 45min of back to back runs was making it heat soaked hence the drop in power

Its making 299.5kw atw atm on a Mainline Dyno, that was the second last run

Ill put the car back on the dyno when i get a chance and play with some timing, ill add a little more into it and see what it does

Car made 318.5 kw once it cooled down

29psi 93oct fuel 4 degrees at peak boost 4750rpm 8 degrees at 7000rpm 26psi

The power is dropping off a little as the boost drops off i can prob run way more timing at redline then i currently am

There comes a point when you the increase the timing you will begin to loose hp, then you back up and use the previous amount of timing. However most tuners tune till they get knock then reduce the timing by about 3-4 degrees which puts you close to the maximum hp. its probably the maximum hp you will get at that rpm. and heat soak may reduce hp, but i think its bc your getting close to that limit. if you continued to increase the timing you would begin to hear knock

i guess if tuners reduce 3-4 degrees that is alot. 2 degrees at most bec losing 4 degrees will make him lose alot of power.

sorry yea i just meant they back it off, dont remember on how much. but when you go do a dyno tune thats how they should tune, increase timing till you start loose power then back off. E-tunes go the other direction sometimes. but they play with the knock sensor instead of dyno numbers

The power definitely went up with the extra degree of timing, it went from 299.5kw to 318.5kw so thats not the issue there.

I could go and add some timing up top but the map is safe and its making wicked power, in the U.S it would be around 500whp

There is no sign of det at all, ive been recording the knockbox and playing it back as its hard to hear once the gate opens and all runs are clean
