Help w/E85 cold start
Hey guys,
Trying to nut this out and chasing my tail trying to get the car sorted for cold-start on E85.
Have searched through five years of threads or so and made changes to the relevant tables that people have recommended.
When cold, it always fires the 2nd or 3rd crank as normal, but then coughs for a sec and dies. Does this 4-5 times and then starts fine.
Warm and hot starting are perfect BTW.
I'm aware that its due to the much lower amount of gasoline in the mixture, etc.
Here are some of the changes i've made, with little to no difference of starting ability.
- Injector Cranking Enrichment IPW Adder (Main)
Bumped up all the 'ms' values from 20*C and below to the point of 2- 2.5 times the default amount with no.
- Injector Cranking Primer Enrichment
Following the recommendation of 'Jim in Tucson' in one of the E85 threads in which he said it fixed his starting issues, I set them the same with no change.
Haven't touched the Post Primer Enrich #1 or Decay #1 as they've never been mentioned.
- I've zero'd out the Ign trim VS Engine Temp tables and reduced the Low Coolant Temp Timing Trim Map areas that were -15 to -5, which has helped drivability to no end after starting.
Running Tephra 90550701 v7
I'm not sure whether some of the tables are labeled wrong or whether i'm not understanding their full usage?
After watching a few vids on Youtube of cars starting in sub 0*C temps first kick, i'm very jealous... lol
Feel free to email as well at bjperry@gmail.com
Cheers.

My advice is to log your coolant temps before you start your car to see the exact temps you are having issues with. Then, start raising that table at the respective temp. Don't be afraid to increase it by a lot.
I ran E85 through an entire Chicago winter with below 0F temps and had little to no problems. The only problems I remember were on the absolute coldest days, well below 0F.

Ok i'll give that a go today and get back to you with before and after tables.
I have to leave it like 24hrs between runs though, as even 12hrs later, it starts perfect.

Did you touch the IPW adder table mate? Or just the cranking enchriment only?
My temps in Australia would be very similar to you in Cali, min of 35-40*F in Winter, 100-105*F in Summer.

nonschlnt - Yep the table is defined the same in my 9055 V7 rom in both main and Alt tables too copied in your/mrfred's settings and the resultant vid is below.
l2r99gst - pre-start coolant temp tonight was 19*C.
Here's a quick vid of the results of the resulting start up, took 4-5 cranks to get it going, and it was pretty fueled up afterwards.

I've got a feeling the tables are mis-labeled in this ROM.
If it works the same as the boost setup, then the Adder is a pretty constant value, not a sliding value like I changed it to be, and the other table which should be labeled "Initial Pulse" like other V7 tables, has the sliding enrichment values depending on coolant temp, to which the 'Adder' table adds too.
Is this right?
I've thrown the following default settings into the Injector Cranking Enrichment IPW Adder (Main) table:
269.328
265.216
262.92
178.824
263.168
263.168
263.168
263.128
And then relabled the table 'Injector Cranking Primer Enrichment' with Initial Pulse to prevent getting confused and thrown your values above into that.
I'll flash the car tomorrow afternoon once its back around the ~19-20*C coolant temp that it usually sits at and report back.

Changes worked perfectly.
Thanks to mrfred a few months ago who gave he a hint that some of the tables are mis-labeled.
I upped the cranking map a touch more, smoothed out the Adder map and it fires 4th turn every time at 17-19*C, same as pump93.
Wife's been driving the car for the past week and hasn't complained about it starting badly, so must be fine.

So if you leave the Injector Cranking Enrichment IPW Adder (Main) table(s) alone and run with those defaults, how do you get cold starts to behave when running different fuels for Alt and Main maps? This table is included in both Alt and Main maps, so would have thought you'd need to tweak it to suit fuel used in that map?
Whereas the Injector Cranking Primer Enrichment (Initial Pulse) is common to both maps, so would have thought changes there for one fuel might not agree with another?
These are my current settings. Trying to get it to behave on cold start on ~E70 (Alt maps) with cold start engine temps between 7-20*C

What address's do you have for those main and alt tables mate?
Your settings should fire on the key on E70 especially.
I use pretty much the same setup and have no issues starting E85 at 9*C.
Main = 3a98
Alt = 3824c
Does it stutter and die on the crank? Or starts, then stalls ~5-10sec later?
