This may be a stupid question but can you get another ECU and "clone" that to work on your car, then have it tuned? That way the current ECU in the car can remain unchanged for "testing".

a CAL ID match is only required for vehicles of model years 2010 and up.

can someone confirm this?

No - Switching maps won't work because the CAL ID and ROM ID are the same no matter which map you are on. You have to flash a stock ROM for your year to pass the test because they cross ref your VIN to the ROM ID and CAL ID.

Yes they keep count!

I know that in Cali a valid CAL ID is required for 2003 +. If you live in Cali, you will need to load the stock ROM which contains the right CAL ID.

I wanted to add that CVN or Calibration Verification Number needs to match. Anytime tuning changes are made this throws the CVN off and will not match. This will cause you to fail.
CAL ID: Should match what ECU you have , for instance I have an EVO 9 ECU (1860A465, This is printed on a sticker and labeled on the actual ECU box), So my CAL.ID in my ECU programming says (1860A465xx)

Sorry, No... In my experience, the CVN was the main reason mine didn't pass at first (2006 EVO 9 USDM)
keep sharing the good info!

Yes people are able to pass regular smog But upon audits by the BAR has been sending out letters letting them know that they need to go to state referee because of discrepancies during the smog. This process seems random and doesn't seem to capture everyone.

Regarding State keeping count of your smogs. YES, there is a log history of all cars in California which require smog. Its even searchable for the public, brought to you by CA BAR. Keep in mind DMV / CA B.A.R hasn't always kept electronic records so don't expect smogs from way back, or history for cars with new plates (ie; custom plates, xfers, new title) most accurate way would be inputting the VIN
Here's the website hope it helps!

Vehicle Test History - CA BAR

Can you please expand upon/explain this in more detail? There are a number of other Evo owners that I know of here in SoCal that are holding off on doing any tuning to our stock cars out of concern for getting popped for a CVN mismatch. Thanks for the insight!

I'm no specialist and this isn't the thread for it. Plus I would like to respect those specialist who make a living and need to feed their families. Information is out there.... Sorry hope you understand.
