You can open it up some, but its limited by the wheel, backpressure in the housing, etc. All turbos are. I really think that the 430-440 we see on "16Gs" Evo and DSM is because we have fuel that will take us to the limit.
My tech Jake's car was an VIII version of mine except he had a ported hotside, external dump, ported exhaust manifold, and ported intake ala MAP (not MAP though). At the time I had the same cams (except was a IX), Megan O2 housing, MUSE cast exhaust manifold, and SD like he was. Both of us were on 1000s and E85. I put down 434@32psi, Jake made 438@34psi. To be fair it was warm so we compared corrected and he was up about 10whp. Assuming he dyno'd on the same day I did I would say he was at 448. That means all the porting he did (keep in mind my turbo was untouched as was my intake) was worth 14whp TOPS.
What makes the power (like Luke) is the details. High Compression, electric waterpump, meth, Intake manifold design, head porting, valves, etc.
All 3 of us use S2s off the shelf by the way and were the same 274/274 designs.
