Bought a used shortblock - let’s see what it’ll do...

Purchased a used shortblock a couple months ago and finally getting around to getting my car to the shop with all the parts. Car was previously just a stock motor being pushed. Made 617/425.

Found this used shortblock pop up pop up locally and it was a good deal so figured why not.

Block is built by Raif @ RRT Motorsports.
-2.0
-.020 over
-Manley Turbo Tuff Rods
-Wiseco 1400hd 10.5:1 Pistons
-Clevite 77 race bearings
-ARP Rod Bolts

Head is somewhat built I suppose. Really needs to be ported but we’re going to see what it’ll do as is.
-Kiggly HLA
-Kelford 272 cams
-GSC Beehive Springs/Retainers
-GSC Valve Seals
-ARP L19 Headstuds

Majority of the work on the car has been done by Kasey Harris at Dyno Time Speedworks. He tunes it as well.

-FIC 2150cc injectors
-Buschur Double Pumper (2x 450s)
-ETS forward facing kit, gen 2 6466

Goal with the car is to run mid 9s. So whatever power level gets me there I’ll be happy. Went 10.4 @ 138 at current power level (617/425)

Car should be ready to be tuned next week hopefully

Have you even checked the compression?

the motor was already out of the car. but I messaged the builder and he vouched for it. I know it’s a gamble but for the price - it wasn’t too bad.

I would still want to see actual compression numbers as soon as possible get an idea of health. And also take a look at each of the cylinder walls. I've heard too many stories of how parts having so much more wear than what seller claims.

Raif is a good guy and is great with evo’s and Dsm’s, one of the most honest guys I have ever dealt with. He has great reviews , his race car is sick , look up all the YouTube videos of his runs, the guy can build a engine. He currently tunes my evo, wish I would of found him earlier as I would of had him build my engine.

With the power you already have and what you're trapping the setup is good for high 9's. Get better tires under the car and get out of the hole faster.

Also, for the cams you've got you don't need a ported head. The stock ports are some of the best I've seen come from a manufacturer for a car this old. Unless you're shooting for 800+ you don't need a ported head.

Car should rip when it's done.

The car is pulling 1.6 60’s at the track with Hoosier QTPs. So not a ton of room for improvement there. I think I could get a 1.5 out of it possibly.

I can cut 1.5's on my NT555R radials. You can definitely do better than that on QTPs. Mess around with tire pressure, have someone take a slowmo vid of your launch to see if you're spinning anywhere. Are you doing a burnout to get some heat in them?

Have your tcase built before you lose it. It'll save you money in the long run.

He'll just spin the wheels with the stock t-case before it breaks. The stock open diff saves him there, lol.

Having an open diff doesn't save anything. I've seen open diff tcases grenade plenty of times. He's making enough power to warrant larger fasteners.

The open front diff is more likely to explode than the Evo9/RS front LSD. And the LSD is also weak.

Knock on wood - but I also am a firm believer in, if you take care of your stuff, it will take care of you. And luckily I got my hands on a low mileage Evo and fluids have been changed regularly. Also I don’t drive like an idiot. i have prob over 30+ 1.60’ launches and it’s held up great.

The qtps also absorb a lot of drivetrain shock so I’m told.
