HKS GTII 7460r Results

So back in May i was deciding on which turbo to go for as an upgrade to my tiny 9.8t evo 8 turbo to bring my car to life. I looked at all the usual suspects.. fp red, green, bbk, s205 (uk turbo technics 500 hp turbo) and so on. I then noticed one of the tuners here in the UK had the new HKS turbo for sale and this kit came with cams, springs and retainers.

For the price i couldnt turn it down and quickly placed my order.

The next 4 months seemed to take forever waiting for the kit to arrive but then last week i got a call saying the turbo is in and ready to be fitted.

Ive spent the last week getting tune to a decent state. Its not perfect but its working well.

Vehicle Specs:
Evo 8 UK
RC 1000cc

HKS GTII 7460r turbo
HKS cams
HKS Springs
HKS adjustable pullies set to 0/0 - had confirmation from garage set to all 0.
Tein lowering springs
Dare Drift Alloys
Innovate LC1 Wideband
Stack Boost Gauge
GM 3bar map
Carbon Fibre Wing

The screenshots you see below (except VDR) are from Software im currently working on called DYNO VISION. Its 99% complete and im hoping for people to help out in testing for me? Drop me a pm if you are interested. Software will be FREE btw.

Here's a dyno shot of my orginal evo 8 turbo compared to the HKS turbo.http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...screenshot.jpg

Amazingly the torque builds up at the same rpm as the little evo 8 turbo but just keeps pulling hard.

The graph below shows the same plot with boost and AFR compared too. The Lag is literally only a few 100 rpms different.

..and Heres a printout of Map tracer feature from Dyno Vision showing my actual timing map and the route each turbo takes. Notice how the tiny 9.8t just drops off higher up the rpms.

And finally, a comparison using VDR

As its stock block im running 1.7 bar max but note i have brought this in gently. All runs done in 3rd gear.

Thank you, Deej1.

It seems like this turbo is as advertised.

Congrats! {thumbup}

so those increases are from turbo, cams, springs and retainers?

darwin_evo Aug 20, 2010 01:46 PM

Yes I think some gains are from the cams but then again the cams should have given away some spool so maybe with the same cams it will spool just like the stock little evo 8 turbo...

Really impressive, very good power band!!!

Looks good! How far off do you figure you are from having the tune all finshed up? Spool looks very nice, hows the response between shifting compared to the stocker?

project_skyline Aug 20, 2010 06:32 PM

Why do you have the cams so retarded like that??? If they are HKS 272's your probably losing power from those settings.

Did you even test them to see what they did for power?

drop24 Aug 20, 2010 07:49 PM

What octane fuel are you running? How does the car feel now compared to the stocker?

I guess the tune at this boost is done. It's very conservative with logs showing zero knock on each wot pull. I may try higher boost after 6k rpm to gain whp and see what she can push. Just a bit nervous with stock block. Response between shifts is awsome!

The cams are hks newest design, they are 274 in and 278 ex. I just dropped the car off at a tuner to get the kit fitted and left pulley setup to those guys. When I picked up my car the owner handed over the keys and struggled to remember what his tech set them to.
You are right though, I need to find out and test them at different settings. Something to do in the Very near future for sure. Recommendations?

It's on uk 99 ron fuel so I think that's equivalent to your 93 pump.

It's night and day between old turbo and this one. It just keeps pulling right from 3.5k to the redline unlike stock turbo would fall off so quickly.

I have e85 available near me too and may tune my alt map for this soon. :)

drop24 Aug 21, 2010 09:57 AM

Go for the E85 for sure if you can get it.

I was kind of hoping this turbo would out spool the stocker. It's nice to see it doesn't lose out much to the VIII unit though except from 3000-3500.
I wonder how much this would gain over an OEM IX turbo and the same upgraded cams. Looking forward to seeing more results from someone with access to a real world dyno.
