Test Overview

As a follow up to our recent round of testing we decided to bring in another car and test every exhaust manifold upgrade that we offer for the Evo 8 & 9 platform :) I do not know the ins and outs of this car (perhaps Jake can chime in) but I do know that its on E85 with an FP Black and supporting mods (with the exception of the intake manifold). We set the boost level to 27psi and the only changes to the tune were made to bring AFR's back in line, enjoy!

Stock Exhaust Manifold vs. MAP Ported Exhaust Manifold

The peak gains here aren't all that exciting but there were some promising results in the mid range (+13whp +10ft/lbs with .5psi less boost) and spool improved as well. Please note the peak boost figure is a small spike around 4500, the rest of the boost curve is nearly identical.

Stock Exhaust Manifold vs. MAP "Short Runner" Tubular Exhaust Manifold

Again, the peak gains here aren't outrageous but the mid range gains (+29whp +22ft/lbs) are substantial and spool hasn't suffered one bit! At just $449.99 shipped the horsepower per dollar ratio is hard to beat!

Stock Exhaust Manifold vs. MAP "Long Runner" Tubular Exhaust Manifold

Our last round of testing featured our in-house fabricated "long runner" tubular exhaust manifold. Based on other tubular manifold test results we expected this manifold to significantly improve top end power with a negative impact on spool characteristics, needless to say we were pleasantly surprised :)

As you can see spool characteristics were very similar to the stock manifold and power output was nearly identical prior to 4500rpms. Peak gains were impressive at +23whp +12ft/lbs but once again the mid range gains (+41whp +31ft/lbs) are where exhaust manifold upgrades really shine!

Conclusion

Ultimately, I'm very happy with the outcome of this testing as I still feel there will be a market for all three of these great products. I would have liked to compare these manifolds at a higher boost level with an aftermarket intake manifold as I feel the performance gains would have been even greater, but that will have to wait until next time. I hope this testing makes your exhaust manifold decision a little easier!

THe long runner welds and map logo are sex! damn man, that is a nice ass manifold. HOw about a huge promotional sale on the long runners if a certain number of buyers sign up??

Thanks for the testing. The short runner is a great bang for the buck and the long runner looks awesome.

I was a fan of these results as well, since it was tested with my car!

The manifold is a really excellent peice, very well made. I used to have an ebay mani on the car, and this new manifold removed a lot of the "tick" you would hear from the metal being so thin on the other manifold.

The flange and portwork to the runners is INSANE. It was so smooth and so shiney I swear I could almost see my reflection in the INSIDE of the runner where you would usually see messy welds. On the street it feels super solid as well. The spool is both quick and smooth, and you can feel the gain and consistency in the mid-high range. (especially when we turned it up to ~35 psi after the testing was done)

Overall I'm more impressed then I thought I was going to be. I am in no way affiliated with MAP besides being an occasional customer throught the last 4-5 years. I would say this manifold is worth every penny, and then some.

Edit: Forgot to add specs of the car

Built 2.0 (Manley/Manley) GSC S3 cams, +1mm valves, stage 5 head porting, e85, FP Black, STOCK intake mani/throttle body (soon to change), etc. When I was originally tuned it was for around 39-40 psi, but since then I have turned it down for winter.

Awesome test's guys!! 2.0L or 2.x?

great way to offer perormance at a variety of whp vs. $

I guess it pays to play!!

can you post a compare of all 4 units tried on 1 graph? oem, ported, short, long??

Keep up the good work!

tscompusa2 Mar 8, 2011 07:49 PM

nice testing. that long runner manifold is really nice looking.

ChrisCarey Mar 9, 2011 08:42 AM

Working on that graph for you Aby, and I've got something you Cali guys might like in the works ;)
