Stock block CBRD BBK-3B GSC S3 93oct + meth inj

I Road tuned John's very nice low mileage evo 8 tonight (33-34K miles). I figured this is a good setup to share despite having to hold the torque down due to stock internals because there's not a whole lot of information about CBRD's BBK-3B turbos.

The turbo felt like it had top end like an fp red/black. It just kept pulling the higher RPM you went.

Temperatures were around 45-50F and we used 93 octane with methanol injection. Around 1000cc of denatured alcohol (two nozzles).

The car ended up making about 520whp and 425wtq in 4th gear.
In 3rd gear we made 500whp 394wtq.

The whole strategy to this tune for me was like all others I do on the stock block. Keep torque down to the most minimal amount possible, while not sacrificing low end response and optimizing top end.

So in order to do this safely, we removed the MAF from the car, and swapped the MBC for a grimmspeed 3 port. We then added BPR8eix plugs, omni 4 bar, and spent a good hour just going over the entire car after we installed all the stuff and converted the car over to speed density. Whatever was missing a zip tie, we added one.

This car came all way from CT, so I wanted to make sure I did whatever I could to make his car perform better and be safer.

The mods are:

Stock block /w 33,9XX miles
BBK-3B with 3.5 anti-surge cover
3" HKS TBE (no cat)
map dump tube with 38mm tial ewg
Buschur 3.5" FMIC /w BR upper piping
65 mm ported tb
Buschur ported exhaust manifold
ID 1000 injectors (Injector duty cycle was 79%)
walbro 450
GSC S3 / zero tic lifters with supertech springs and retainers
sparktech non cdi cop
Aquamist HFS-3
Grimmspeed 3 port
Forge RS bov
Open turbo inlet / no intake or filter temporary
Tephra v7 Speed density /w ecuboost

Finally the graph below. Showing both a 3rd gear pull and 4th gear. These pulls were performed on the interstate. (3 people in the car).

We did not load the car up under 3000RPM to keep the torque hit to a minimum at low RPM. The turbo seemed to get full boost slightly over 4000RPM though in 3rd.

Tom I just got home about 10 minutes ago, it was a long ride but worth it!! Thanks for posting the results and for the awesome tune.{thumbup}

Great results! I'm loving these stock block threads. This gives me confidence in what I will achieve. That's only at 30psi, I'm impressed.

Hopefully I'll be done in 2 weeks time and post up the results.

good job Tom! this turbo was on my wish list. too bad CBRD does not offer it anymore. at least Blouch has a version of it.

Bump for another ct Evo owner! Tom is amazing!

Mivec or no?

Curious how this spools compared to MHI hotside bb red. My car being non-mivec and S2 cams, both 91 and E85 see full boost at around 4100-4200.

Sadly, no pure 93 octane data, only 93 with Methanol, so its unrelated to most other data.
Its close to E85, not pump fuel.

Thanks John! Pleasure tuning you and meeting both you and your friend. :)

Yes. It doesn't take much to make power if you can make the boost curve hold solid like that. :)

Blouch makes CBRD turbo's so it is the same product basically.

No its an evo 8, no mivec head. Also S3 cams which lag it as well.

We didnt really load it up, but id say its inbetween a red and a black. I wasnt driving the car, so i cant really comment on its response in the driver seat.

We were trying to do the pulls as safely as possible, so we kept from starting at really low RPM.

If I had to guess, if you start around 2500RPM in 3rd, you will see full boost around 4400RPM.

It should be in the neighborhood of a 128 trap speed though in 1/4.

Nope, we did not tune it on straight 93 because the Aquamist is designed to where you cant just run regular 93. If you turn the system off it will go back to wastegate pressure. That is how this car was wired up. Of course tuning it on wastegate pressure wouldn't of gave any impressive results.

I wouldnt say its like E85. Not even close. if I put E85 in this car, i can assure you ill make 600whp+

I might be wrong on the meth nozzle size, it is no where even close to the timing i could run on E85. on E85 we could run another 8deg+

So factor in the timing + it will take more boost, so you're looking at 100WHP gains with E85 in this vehicle.

tom, the comp wheel is bigger than a red, but the turbine is smaller than a red.

hiroki702 May 26, 2015 10:21 AM

Nice numbers man!

Ah that explains it! Thanks Mychailo.

Naw, Fred. Are you sure? I just went from a Red to a 3-B and I am pretty sure that the major diameter as well as the minor dia. is somewhat dinkier on the 3-B compared to the Red. It is pretty well accepted that the Red's compressor flows about 57 and the 3-B flows a bit less at around 54.

Tom
Stellar work I've been following TSC tuning for a while and recently began to chime in after becoming a member here.
You just earned some business

The inducer is definitely larger, but I couldn't say about the exducer. Here are my notes:

FP Red (all FP spec)
max flow rate = 59 lbs/min
compressor inducer = 54.8 mm
compressor exducer = 76 mm
turbine inducer 67.3 mm
turbine exducer 58.8 mm

BBK-B-BB
max flow rate 57 lbs/min
compressor inducer = 57 mm (measured by me)
compressor exducer = XX mm
turbine inducer = 63.5 mm (measured by me, same as BBK Full)
turbine exducer = 54.5-55 mm (measured by me, same as BBK Full)
