Colin's @ turn14 Evo IX MR Stock turbo GSC R2 cams 93oct results
I had the pleasure to take this car at the shop and do some maintenance for it. Me and my cousin did a full timing job on it, rebuilt the cyl head with GSC Stage 3 springs/retainers, and put in some GSC R2 cams since that's what the customer sent us with the car. EGR delete, injector/pump install, and other misc things.
I wasn't really happy about the cams based on the turbo choice, but it seemed to work out pretty well. The car has great response all around, and made very good power for being in 70-75F temps. I will be 100% honest with you all. This car is more fun to drive then my personal evo. Reason being is, I can mash on the throttle whenever I want wherever I want and get instant boost, and not have to worry about killing myself or not. Thankfully I have another evo I am going to put a 71hta on so I can enjoy turns and not just straight line interstate stuff, but those who jump to big turbos right off the bat should give smaller turbos a try first. Especially for a street car / daily commute. The mod list is: Stock block / head (no port work) (only around 43K on engine) Stock Evo IX turbo ETS 3.5" FMIC /w ic piping Tial QR Bov Buschur 3" TBE /w testpipe FIC 1450cc inj (44% IDC @ 11.4 AFR) Modified Walbro 255 GSC R2 cams No air filter Shep stage1 5spd trans swap Spoolinup non cdi ignition Tephra v7 Speed density /w hybrid boost Of course since its a stock block, my main priority was to keep the torque low/flat, but not sacrifice the feel of the vehicle itself. Nice! Great job.

Interesting choice of cams for that setup. In general aren't those cams designed for a stroker motor? What is the general power band for that cam?
|
looks like great power for 93 octane. and boost threshold looks to still be around 3700 rpm. seems like a good endorsement for r2's.

GSC website says 4000rpm to 8000rpm, so not totally that bad really. But anywhere 4K and under the S1 will take it im sure.

they are designed for a lower rpm range than s3's. higher lift than s2's. in concept, a good match for a stock or small-ish turbo on 2.0L that will run out of breath by 8000 rpm. only thing i've heard is that aaron says port work is needed to get the most out of them. and the high lift requires a beefy spring that produces greater valvetrain loading. i've got a set on standby that will be installed in a few months. |
What hood is that?
That has to be the best aftermarket hood I have seen on an evo. |
Info on the wheels? Looks great!

The fenders are 10mm wide body seibon
Wheels mrfred got right. Hood is Voltex according to google, so FossilAus is correct. |
Love the fenders does the car still run fender liners?

May I ask why r2 cams on a stock 2.0?
|
I was curious about that also but guessing he's planning on doing a stroker build in the future.
Power looks good for 9 turbo on 93 though so it seems the cams would do well on a 2.0 and not just a stroker build. This made me want to see a built and bigger turbo 2.0 running these cams. |
Its what the customer provided us with his car. It wasn't by choice. The car was very responsive and very fun on the street.
Ya the cams didn't seem to have any bad affects at all really. I'm sure a set of S1 will get more down low, because they focus on that area more, but these really were responsive. |
This car makes about 10-15 more whp and about 20 more wtrq than my car with pretty much the same setup.
