I got a basic alpine deck and jl audio tr compenents, head unit was $200 and the components/rears were $300, sounds really good, clear and some nice mid range bass

I'd get a new head unit before I got new speakers, especially components. I personally wouldn't run any components off of a head unit, but . . . if you're looking at a basic setup, Alpine Type S components sound pretty good. Most components though are going to be looking for 60-100 watts RMS, which the stock deck doesn't even come close to.

I have some Elemental Designs 6" subs waiting to be installed. All of Elemental Designs products get great reviews.

I agree with Evo Tengoku and TheTumblerIX. Upgrade your headunit first (I did). Once you hear the difference, you might hold off on speakers for a while.
Speakers only sound as good as the source.

If u are looking to run an amp, without adding alot of weight, look into a sony slim amp, and get some components for the rear and some 2-ways for the front.
Heres a link

You could find it cheaper at other stores

Why would you get components for the rear and two ways for the front? That's backwards.

well actually, i used the component speakers for bass and the supplied tweeters for highs and the 2-ways for mids and highs, i bridged two channels into one for the rear and i the other two channels for the front. I liked the sound of it, and i didnt add that much weight.

don't upgrade your speakers unless you want to run an amp or at least a much better head unit... the stock head unit puts out so little power that it will make any after market speakers sound horrible (even if the speakers themselves are capable of sounding good with an amp).

I have been thinking about buying boston acustic 6x9's for the rear for a while to get a little more bass and clearer sound for a while... also just a new head unit that is self aplified make the stock speakers sound far better.
