Remote start - do I need a spare key?
I am a Best Buy installer and we ARE allowed to install certain Remote starts onto manual transmission vehicles, but only the Viper alarms that we sell that have a manual mode. When installed properly the secquence is; Arrive at your destination. Push the brake, pull the e-brake release the brake, push the remote start button on the key fob, take your key out of the ignition (the car stays running), get out of the car, Push the lock button on your remote, this locks the doors and turns off the car. This sequence guarantees that the car is in neutral, if you even open a door before you remote start, you have to repeat the entire sequece. Let me know if you have any other questions as I do these alot.
quick question.. i was going to put an auto start on my evo.. but my friend at the shop refuses to put one on cuz he's had people put it in gear when its off and accidentally hit the start button and the car has taken off and plowed into houses and etc...
i myself haven't heard or seen that before.. so is that true??
and if it is.. is there any way to keep that from happening besides just keeping it off of gear??

also, im pretty sure viper or another company makes a special kit for manual autostart for a sequence where to you the car off and an alarm goes off that makes you put the car in neutral and pull the ebrake with some other stuff inbetween.. not 100% sure but definitely worth looking up.
i want autostart too since i always warm my car up in the morning it wont be so bad and i wont have to worry about someone stealing my car at work.
best buy did a viper autostart in my 04 raliiart no spare key required, but a local shop did a compustar alarm/autostart in my 06 evo 9 mr and it needed a spare key, little under 100 bucks from the stealership
in the couple evo's ive installed remote starts in. i have always disabled the imob in the ecu. another way to do it if u dont wanna spend 100 for another key. is you get a razor blade and cut around the outside of the key, taking the chip out. for there on you only need $1 keys. yes i know it deletes the point of having the key, but some times ppl dont wanna pay 100+ for another key on top of the price im charging them to do a remote start.
also, and 08+ evo fortin makes a bypass that works doorlock, triggers, and you dont have to give up a key.

i have the viper 5901 in my 9 with the imob. disabled via ecuflash and setup in automatic mode so i dont have to go through the bs steps and if one of my kids opens door and ruins the wholel process it doesnt concern me leaving it in gear i just installed a valet button when i stop the car press the button and the 5901's turbo timer takes over runs for a minute and shuts down. So i guess my advice is use the turbo timer feature then you know its out of gear every time, if not as soon as you go to get out of car when the cars stalls you will remember.

you guys don't need a spare key, all you need is a bypass. You wire it up and i takes the "code" a key puts out and will only activate when you remote start. Best buy will charge you if you dont bring your own alarm any where from 120-240 depends on alarm kind or if its just a remote start.
You can buy one from them and "basic" install is included but you still have to pay $30 to have the bypass installed and another $30 for a clutch bypass, plus the parts for that and thats $10.

Directed Electronics (makers of Viper, Hornet, and most other nice alarms) offer a remote start module for manual transmission. If you're installer is unaware of it, then he shouldn't be touching your car in my opinion.
Another option is to use the handbrake as an input instead of the park position that would be used on an autotragic car. That way the handbrake has to be up for the remote start to work.
