Budget race seats - Corbeau vs F1Spec vs NRG
 

Now, I am all about racing on a budget. I have decided to purchase some decently light fixed back bucket seats namely the corbeau FX1 Pro in black to help me achieve my weight reduction goals. It weighs 16 lbs and I know corbeaus are well known in the industry...The corbeaus will about 725 shipped with sliders.

The car will be used to drag, auto-x and for HPDE and I would like something that is certified and approved. Also, its not a daily driver by any means...

But, the baller hemisphere of my brain interjects - So, I found these F1 Spec seats and NRG seats which seem to cost a bit more - NRG is 860 shipped with free sliders, F1spec is 980 shipped without sliders. They weigh about 12 pounds or so.

I am wondering if they are worth it, I am not sure what the certifications of these 2 brands are...Any advice?

Sparcos in FG weigh the same as corbeaus and the Evo2''s weigh 12 lbs but cost almost 1300 + brackets - too much for me. I would rather spend the extra 700 on the autopower rollbar and some good harnesses.

Please advise - I suppose I want someone to say "go with the corbeaus, you won't regret it" :lol:

its just heresay, so take this with a grain of salt, but i heard of the NRG seats bieng less than safe...

the story i heard was that someone got rear ended, the seatback failed to stay upright & they practically ended up in the backseat

I see no certification tags on them, so I tend to believe you. My buddys NRG steering pulled off the hub on his honda while racing....Yeah, NRG products don't have the best rep.

I wonder if F1 spec is the same too! :(

If you read the F1 Spec for sale thread in the marketplace he says that they have no certification, but according to him you can get certified ones from them, they just cost more.

Braille makes seats in association with Recaro that are lightweight and are FIA certified and don't cost much more than what you are looking at.

The vinyl/suede ones are the same price as Braille's seats.

Sparco Evo and Evo2's are within your price-range too. They have other race buckets in that price range as well that are all certified. Can't go wrong with Sparco either.

I recommend Corbeaus if you are on a budget. But not if you are racing HPDE. As they are not certified.

They are a tubular seat and come in at 18.7 lbs with a retail price of 299 per seat(brackets extra)

We normally can help you out on a whole package.

If you need a fiberglass backing you can go with the TEC(16.7 lbs) that are 475 per seat.

Both of these are FIA approved and should be good for most racing classes.

Ben - Corbeaus cannot be used in HPDE or professional HPDE racing? I thought they could be used all around. Is there some place that explains this online? Thanks!

I am not familar with the rules of HPDE I would check your rule book and see what certification they require but Corbeau seats are not tagged FIA certified which is what most racing series require.

Ben - I am not racing in NASA etc, just local HPDE events which allow stock seats with harnesses. So, I am guessing corbeaus will work.

Plus - its too late now since I ordered a set from you a bit ago already :)

I went with Corbeau FX1 Pro. 16 lbs and at $299 retail, I am all in. The mounts cost $100 retail for each seat as well...I am excited for this setup, I need to find some Evo VIII seats and re-cover them!

I had Corbeaus in my last car.....they were great. Great price and great quality!{thumbup}
