UPDATED 12/2018: 2018+ Mitsu Android radio swap

Hey guys,

I got bored again and decided to see what sort of trouble I could get into with some of my parts-bin stuff. I had a fairly nice radio from a ~15 Outlander I've been using as a test-radio for two years and decided it would look nice in my car if I could use a cheaper radio for testing instead.
I wasn't sure how the CAN bus audio would work without said bus, knowing that people have had problems switching them from new to old bus vehicles, not to mention some vehicles (Chrysler) the radios won't work at all without bus operation. Turns out, it works great.
And on top of that, the CAN operation for the handsfree system is only used for diagnostics and speed-based audio adjustments, so that means the FUSE hands free system is in play too.
The only thing I can not get operating is the reverse camera, as it uses CAN bus for reverse input instead of 12V+ like aftermarket systems, and obviously no way to simulate the CAN signal for reverse message easily. I'm still not convinced it is impossible, but it is on the back burner.

Quick and easy wire harness; removed all CAN bus wiring, direct wired the CAN bus connector directly into the hands free connector and then the radio adapter harness. Cut the microphone harness down a bit and direct-wired to the adapter harness with intact shielding. Factory plugs wired into adapter socket.

Grafting in a 2D wide socket to a double din faceplate, secured with urethane then smoothed with body filler.

A coat of Infinity Galaxy-something silver (extra on hand). Pretty close to Lancer silver dash trim if not a bit glossy. Still needs wetsanding and polishing.

Hopefully the microphone never fails, it's urethaned in (the microphone pops apart though if ever necessary).

Modified general radio brackets (flanges cut off) combined with ~2017 Outlander radio brackets upper corners cut. Was going to weld, but just overlapping is sufficient apparently. Obviously it is far from lined up but brings it in mighty close for the top.

I found that if I double-sided taped the hands free unit to the bottom of the display unit I could use it to my advantage in mounting; since there are no real provisions for lower mounting the hands free unit can serve this purpose by hooking behind the reinforcement bar above the relocated AC controls. This keeps the radio display from sliding forward and of course rear clearance with the harness takes care of tipping back.

Another thing to note.... you can not run dual USB unfortunately. I was hoping to be able to use both the USB port on the radio and the USB port on the hands free, but unfortunately when the hands free unit is plugged in, the USB port on the back of the radio is automatically disabled, even if the other port is not in use. I have not checked to see if it can be used to at least charge a phone though; I may do that later when I have it apart to wetsand/polish the face trim, as I do have the ~6 foot USB harness and socket assembly for installing in the dash if I wanted to (currently the in-use USB is just dumped into the glove box like on a Mirage or Eclipses etc).

Steering wheel controls are functional, but I have nowhere to mount them currently. Their shape is awkward, and will be difficult to blend into anything, not to mention the lack of locations for options to begin with, so that is on the back burner for now.

Edit:. Looks like there may be an obsolete pin on the camera connector that can turn the camera on... Have to check it out next week, left the camera harness at work :/

I know my Evo doesn't run the CAN bus but what does it run - what do they call it?

CAN has become a generic term in the industry as there are so many different types, with even newer Mitsubishi's running multiple different buses on the same vehicle. The bottom line is that they are all area networks so that individual ecus can talk to each other rather than just run in parallel.
VIII and IX do not use any type of controller area network protocol....The systems do not share information and communicate with each other in that way, they simply have the inputs split so that different ecus can can use that data individually.
That said, where data is sent (for example from the clock spring to the etacs, or etacs to front ECU), pre-CAN bus (roughly anything older than 06) vehicles used what Mitsubishi called the simplified wiring system which was a multiplex and K-line based system. Very basic by comparison; surprising that the new style radios rely so little on the bus that they can work 90% properly as standalone.

Managed to do a test fit today work a 2019 Mitsubishi Android Auto radio. I should have just waited and done this to begin with; sooo much easier lol.
No FUSE anymore, USB/Bluetooth/handsfree are all integrated into the unit, so is satellite... Making all my efforts to get the older satellite and FUSE system integrated
So far apart from obviously the vehicle info/data app is not going to work (CAN data is obviously not happening on a k-line car), it's mostly just getting hands on stuff.
The GPS antenna is hella expensive and no junkyards I could find in the US would sell it to me (in two cases, even waving two Benjamin's at them, they just won't be bothered apparently, but will sell them if I come in person to get it for under $20. Makes sense).
The USB cable is proprietary, see comment about getting a GPS antenna from a junkyard above.
There is one proprietary connector on the back that I can't find any other application and it's required for the microphone (nothing else that applies to an older car). Yep, same thing trying to get connectors cut.. though I can understand that to an extent, again if you wave a $100 bill at someone for a couple plug connectors I can't see the issue.

So anyway.... I found that the aftermarket Kenwood GPS connector is super similar and should work week minimal modification so that is on order. USB cables are on order from Mitsubishi, so that sucks but whatever. The one oddball connector I found a extremely similar connector used on a particular AC controller and was able to modify it (stripped four pins width from it) and that's working well.

The part number is 8741A00# where the last digit is higher the newer it is. Mines a 5, current revision as far as I know is 6.

AM/FM with HD ability is built in. USB functionality is built in but requires a proprietary cable. It has separate iPod specific support.
XM/Sirius tuner is built in (requires an antenna, uses OE standard mustard connector). Bluetooth audio and telephony is built in, but requires an external microphone. Steering wheel controls are supported using 2014+ controls or 2008-2013 controls with a few resistors to adjust the resistance values.
Android auto and Apple Carplay are both integrated and require the phone to be plugged in to work. The Android Auto allows direct use of navigation (which also supports Google maps or satellite imagery display and live traffic conditions), native Pandora and Google Music support, and while not listed as an audio option on screen, supports YouTube music too (I think they are phasing GM out and YTM to replace it anyway).
Google Assistant is integrated and works well, but is a tad slower than my phone (pixel 3xl). I haven't fully tested the Assistant functionality, but it can read your text messages to you on receipt as well as dictate reply texts, or start a new text. You can use it for web search for audio at least... I haven't checked beyond that.

Not usable (I can't imagine getting it to work, though I may look into it) is vehicle data support, live fuel economy, average speeds, the usual stuff. If you configure it for PHEV then it will have battery specs and hybrid operation etc. With no data input the stuff is there (for whatever vehicle it is configured as) but show no activity of course.

There is certainly more, but it's getting late and I'm tired.

You'll need a newer era Mitsubishi primary radio connector, a GPS anntenna if you don't want the error message at startup (it isn't necessary, it will use your phone GPS if needed)... I'm testing out a generic Kenwood antenna tomorrow... If you want to use Android Auto or Carplay you'll need the proprietary USB cables. If you want to use voice-control of the radio, Google Assistant, or hands free calling, you'll need to procure the one oddball connector I had to "make" or just pin it directly and hot-glue them to make your own connector so you can connect a microphone.
Obviously you'll need an AC relocate kit, a double din fascia, a ~2014+ fascia from any Mitsubishi to accommodate the larger than double din radio and graft the two together, and you'll need to make your own mounting brackets.

I think that about covers it. If I think of anything else tomorrow I'll add, I have to get to sleep now though :)

Really makes me think to try to do this in spring (my Evo is in a bigger not heated parking garage). I have an european Evo, my A/C is alteady in the lower position, no relocation needed for me ;)

Another few questions:
Is Torque supported over Android Auto (I have a Pixel2) in this radio? This would allow to get at least some readings over the ODBII dongle.
Could you list also the part numbers for the proprietary USB cable, the radio connector and the GPS antenna? Of course I'm interested in the results of the Kenwood one, especially if it is significantly cheaper.
The mic cable can also be ordered form Mitsubishi?

You can't add apps as far as I know on this unless someone has rooted it.
if you want the Sport dual cable (the outlander uses two separate cables, twice as expensive) it's 8755A249 and 8718A042 (the plastic flange the cable snaps into with logo).
You'll have to build your own microphone cable; any Mitsu hands free microphone will work, just have to make your own wiring.
The aftermarket Kenwood GPS Seema to work fine. It's picked up 6 satellites in about 3 minutes. I think it will pick up more in time. Extra bonus, it's magnetized and you can just stick it in the metal support behind/above the center AC vents. They are like $11 on eBay, factory GPS antenna with no way to mount it is like $160 (8751A135).

@patric78 for torque to display on a head unit, the head unit would have to be able to mirror what is on your phone to the head unit screen. Unless the app can be added to the operating system/heaad unit like stated above. So if you want torque app to work on a head unit screen, make sure if can mirror your phone.

I want to be able to do this for my car and this seems like the better/easiest solution I have researched so far. I could be wrong though.

On a side note about that, the radio itself supports HDMI input, though "not while in motion". Of course it would never know when a 1-9 Evo was in motion to begin with, so that would allow HDMI at any time. If you could output the screen from your phone (or other torque-running device) through to an HDMI cable that would work.

Problem here would be that the HDMI input on the back of the radio is proprietary just like the USB... And Mitsubishi (at least currently) does not have any HDMI port supported vehicles stateside to be able to order the harness for it. Overseas (or new production I haven't seen) may have it though. Likewise, it may be the same as aftermarket Kenwood radios, I haven't looked into it yet though.

Many thanks for all the information, I think I will probably go for an afternarket stereo that supports Android Auto, a standard 2-DIN Brezel, and use this to also enable Torque over Android Auto. Easyer and cheaper.
