Drove an STi and my Evo has a problem??
Drove my friends 05 STi last night, after he installed his Typhoon intake and a Kartboy short shifter. The car handles great and looks good with the Eibachs and 18" Gramlights. The Kartboy feels mechanical to say the least and was a total difference from the Evo stock shifter. And the intake sounds freakin mean when the turbo whines and releases. And he's got just the stock BOV and turbo.
Ok while I was driving, I noticed that on very low speeds (around 1-5mph, without stepping on the gas) on 1st gear, the STi drives fine without the need for me to ride the clutch...unlike my Evo. I was telling my friend that in low speeds like that, the Evo always feels like it's going to die off, like it was struggling to keep idling. I told him that if I was coming close to a stop(under 5mph) I usually ride the clutch a little bit or the car would just choke and stop. But on his car, I slow down to almost 1mph and the car does not feel like it was struggling to stay on. Does anyone else experience that?
I don't know what to search for about this "problem", if it is one. The Evo is pretty much stock. I have a K&N panel filter, my own grounding kit and I just recently installed an HKS boost gauge. I haven't got my car tuned or anything cause I'm still looking for a good tuner in the area and it's my daily driver, so I can't send the ecu for a reflash. If anyone has suggestions or shed some light on what I can do about this "quirk"...pls. let me know.
On a side note:
While driving the STi, I noticed that it normally boosts to about 1bar at the most, whereas my Evo usually boosts to 1.4 peak and usually over 1bar through 3rd-5th. Is that normal since we have a higher boost setting than the STi? This is all new to me, so learning is half the battle.

There is nothing wrong with your EVO, the characteristics of the EVO and STi are different. The STi has more broader power band, with more low end power compared to the EVO. The EVO on the other hand, is sluggish down low, but awesome up top in the higher RPMs and/or during boost. The reason for this simple, the Subaru has 2.5L compared to the Mitsubishi's 2.0L. Still bigger diplacement or not, the 4G63 is an Oozie, while the EJ25 is a Beretta 9MM.

I came from an Impreza 2.5RS so I do understand the displacement differences, but we are talking very low end speeds here. Creeping speeds to be exact, about 1-5mph. I don't believe having the extra .5L of displacement can keep the STi from stalling under 2000 rpm, like I feel with my Evo.
I already know how great the car is generally. mid to high range is good, and I think low end is fine also.... except for the very low end.
I guess I'm concern cause I feel like I have to step on the clutch most of the time or ride it alittle, on those low speeds, and we all know how great our clutches are.

.5 liters is 20% bigger than our stock 2L. I would love to have 20% more displacement. My friend has a 2.3 Evo, and that thing is just awesome on torque. To the point, he blew off his intercooler pipe, and didn't even know for two days, until he kicked it. So yes, .5 makes some difference.

I might have to try out a regular 2.0L wrx to see if there is a difference also. Hmmm... have to call another friend. For now, hopefully my clutch will still like me. thanks everyone. Will have to really learn the car even more. 3K miles is still to early, I guess.
