Whine in first and second here. Gears probably have a more straight than helical cut to them.

All the gears are cut at the same helical angle. The problem is that the first and second gears interface more than the higher gears due to a larger gear and greater gear reduction. Since more of the gears interface there is more tooth contact and hence more noise produced. If you have having noise in first and second you may have a problem with the 1-2 hub/sleeve since first and second share the same one.

The problem here is that everyone describes the noise as a whine, but every whine is different and different whines could mean different things making a problem like this very difficult to diagnose over the interwebs.

Yes the intarweb is not a good place to solve a complicated problem. I'm going to give TRE a call after I get back from errands Thier pricing seems nice!

Not cracked like you might think but subsurface fractures found by magnafluxing the gears that were most likely caused by abusive launches. He said these cracks will cause gear noise even though the gear works fine. Of course continued abuse will cause these fractures to become full on broken gears at some point. He also said he sees a lot of damaged hub/sleeve assemblies which also result in drivetrain noise. I can go on and on, but if you want a real healthy diagnosis of your problem give Jon at TRE a call and talk to him for a while. (www.teamrip.com)

BTW, I didn't have by drivetrain rebuilt because of any noise, I had it done due to the many TSB's out on the tranny and to make sure everything was in good order before the coming race season.

how much was the rebuild? What he do, stronger bolts, sub-structure support? Supporting pin for gear stabilizing?

what is it man! lol.

My car is doing this tonight! I went to the track and made some launches, my car then proceeded to wheel hop. The whine is only during deceleration, not when accelerating. Its much louder than the normal whine.
