tranny whine yay. Help please!
tranny whine yay. Help please!
So I did a bit of agressive launching tonight and I don't know if I encountered wheel hop or not, but it felt like a normal launch.
This sound is new and very scary
I've searched but I don't know if its the clutch or synchros or whatever. It was my first 2 launches on this new clutch to set up the situation. ~5500 RPM Dump. Not much slippage and I could barely smell any clutch burn afterwards.
The sound is a soft but high pitch whine around 3k RPMS in First gear. It doesnt last long as 1st gear isnt long but I only hear it in first. Also I get it if I were moving and put it into neutral and try to push the shifter into first. Not really try, but just put a bit of pressure against the first gear synchros the whine will come back. It will not happen if I apply pressure to the other gears. I can hear it only in the front of the car.
Also If it Put it into first and decel to a stop i will hear it all through first, like from 10 mph-0.
So based on this can you guys tell me whats wrong? Synchros? Front diff? The Clutch? I'm really worried
since this might be pricy.
Thanks

Well I drove around on it some more... basically before at any speed I could disengage the clutch and push it into first without any noise, whether this be at 40 mph or 5. Now it seems that only when i'm slowing to a very slow stop can I put it into first without any noise. If I engage when slowing to a stop, then I hear this sort of chugging whine, the whine goes up and down( sort of the sound of what the fat one of the tree stooges did..that dwoo dwoo dwoo). If I just try to push against the snychros without actually pushing hard enough to engage then I get this progressive whine that gets louder as i push harder, but once i'm in it becomes the chugging one.
If I engage in first and start from a stop then I have no noise( the earlier noise I mentioned I think I had before just because of something loose in my Apillar that made a high pitched vibration). But yeah so basically coming to a stop and putting it in first now makes noise...I don't do so I know that i'll have to start moving again at any speed higher than 5 mph but I do it as a habit at a red light, Like ill push it into first going 30 mph when i know I'm going to stop and just keep the clutch diseganged. It seems that I can't do that anymore is basically whats happening.
So anyone else have such problems? Has it led to a broken T-Case? Thanks for your reponses so far.
Does your first gear sound like this now? And if it is my synchros how would launching screw up first gear? if it's my T-case would it just be my front diff? Thanks!

if it IS your T-case, then yes, 99% chance its only your front dif, time to upgrade.
if its not that, your synchros sound like they are fugged in first gear. if it is putting pressure back on your hand and whining when you are trying to put it in first, sounds like your synchros to me....front dif would give you problems in every gear, AND would make a clak clak noise when you turn.

Any advice on course of action? Fix it immediately? What can I fix it with so this wont happen again? I can drive around on it fine...just makes an annoying noise when in first gear thats especially noticable when decellerating.
If it's just the first gear synchro why would it make noise when the car is engaged? It doesnt feel any harder than before to push it into first...just makes noise.
If it's my front diff that's messed up how come i can drive it around? Or rather how can i only make a sound in first gear?
So basically i'm asking the same questions again but what i'm really trying to get at is what do I do and how much is it going to cost
Thanks for your patience. Car still drives but replace the tranny? Just have a shop take it a apart and fix whats wrong? Upgrade to a Quaiffe Front Diff? Replace the first gear synchros?
Thanks~

I could be wrong though.
It does only happen in first...and I can still shift into first fine...
Really right now it's just a creepy noise that came from me launching the car. I have 10.5k Miles on it...
But I have had a "whine" perhaps in first while decelelling but I don't know if its the same, this is certainly louder and more pronounced and much more...lumpy like cams. It isnt a constant whine but changes pitch.
For those who's first gear whines do you experience the noise when pushing the shifter into first? I get a while pushing it in so that may be a clear difference.
I could use some more opinions and thanks to those who already responded!

whine should be progressive. It should get louder as your RPM rises.
I get a tranny whine as well, which is a different sound then when your T-case is dead whine.
It should go away as the rpm rises on the 1st gear. If it gets louder, go get it looked at.
Last time I heard of tranny work, replacement, it was $5000 +.
Check your RPM when it's high up like 5000rpm to 6000 rpm. Check to see if your RPM stay up or revs up instead of falling down.
That makes the whine as well, but it's not your tranny, that's something else, like your clutch wearing out.
thread on that somewhere.
whine when your put your 1st gear in? I don't hear anything when I'm engaging 1st gear.

I just had my tranny and T-Case rebuilt by Jon at TRE. I spoke to him at length on the phone about the problems people are having with their Evo drivetrains and the things that he has come into his shop. He told me that every Evo transmission that he's rebuild (except mine
) has had a cracked first gear. Not cracked like you might think but subsurface fractures found by magnafluxing the gears that were most likely caused by abusive launches. He said these cracks will cause gear noise even though the gear works fine. Of course continued abuse will cause these fractures to become full on broken gears at some point. He also said he sees a lot of damaged hub/sleeve assemblies which also result in drivetrain noise. I can go on and on, but if you want a real healthy diagnosis of your problem give Jon at TRE a call and talk to him for a while. (www.teamrip.com)
BTW, I didn't have by drivetrain rebuilt because of any noise, I had it done due to the many TSB's out on the tranny and to make sure everything was in good order before the coming race season.
