HKS Camshafts

I own a 1993 Evo 1. I am thinking about getting a pair of 272's. This may seem like a stupid question, but I'm stationed in Baghdad right now, and cars are the furthest thing from my mind, but if I get these cams, do I have to get something like and E-manage or can I just drop them in and go? I'll also be getting adjustable cam sprockets too. Thanks!!!

If you get cams, go with the sprockets too. You won't need any fuel managment, but if you did you could squeeze a few more ponies out of it. Also, you can set the advance/retard of the sprockets at zero for now, but you might want to head to a dyno to get them dialed in . . . unless you like the "seat-of-your-pants" method. Good luck.

Jason,

I'm looking at the same thing. To compliment the Cams and cam gears you need some kind of flash or ECU upgrade to get the real benefits of the upgrade. I'm going with the the Vishnu flash. Check out their website for their stage upgrade versus what kind of HP your looking for. I want the 390V I'm going with the 272/272 or 264/272. Take care out there, tell all those guys with you thanks. GO USA

Thanks for the info guys. My car was previously owned by a japanese mechanic that is motec certified. He remapped my cars ecu already, so I'm porbably looking at going with a stand alone unit, dont you think? Which one would you suggest for my old evo?

Thanks Volunteer, we appreciate the support!!!

I don't have any first hand knowledge with the standalone's, I hear some people talk about how difficult it is to get some of the standalones dialed in, and can get expense with all the extras. Good luck with it, at least a mechanic had it so you know its taking care of.

uhm... if you get cams... you might need some stand alone to keep the bottom end more rich so that you don't get random stalling. but as far as i've heard... no one has ever had problems with their cams stalling... it's usually a mix of mods that causes the stalling.

going stand alone will help with cam lope though, you can get a silky smooth idle with stand alone. and of course it will get you teh maximum amount of power in any setup.

you have brought up the obvious issue of tuning... if you don't know how to yourself you'll have to get someone to do it for you... so you'll have to use a system that is well used in the US or whereever you will be keeping your car... and during this process of being dialed in you can learn for yourself too... and when you're confident enough you can tweak your own stuff.

I live in Japan so my tuning options are wide open. I'll just have to go to Autobacs and schedule some dyno time when I get back to Japan. Should I go with an E-manage?

Man, nobody is America is very knowledgable about the Evo I. It has the 4G63 that has the same head flow direction as the DSM cars, but it was never brought over her. If it has any peculiarities then nobody here would know. But if you are already going to be in Japan then ask one of the tuners there wat you should do. Hell, they have been building those cars since they first left the factory!

Yeah. I do ask them but there is still a language barrier to deal with. That's why I ask you guys, just so I can get a vague idea to get the gears in my head turning. My mechanic doesn't speak english, so I always take a Japanese guy that I work with along with me because he translates a little, and since he drives the mechanics racecar, I get a discount, haha.

mmm yeah standalone is a biznatch... but hey if you're in japan try a mines ecu or something... they prolly have one that has all the cam stuff sorted out... or try their version of flashes etc... there's more options available in japan, if all else fails... just get an apexi super afc... richen up the bottom end... no probs.

and you'll have a savage cam lope
